HeroSports.com has us listed in their 15 Most Likely FCS vs. FBS Upsets in 2019.  https://herosports.com/fcs/football-2019-fcs-vs-fbs-upsets-bzbz

I'm hopeful.

We've never lost to them!  😀  Got to keep our record clean! I went to that playoff game against them. Before we could get seated, SIU had scored a TD and was on its way to another score!

Hill and Kill spoke at a thank you dinner for business donors last night in the conference room at the stadium. Hill was not too specific about the new defensive coordinator or his schemes except to say there goal was to go from last to 1st in our conference. He made it clear that last year was unacceptable and a turn around by the defense is imperative

Kill said he told the administration he was only interested in coming back when they hired him if they supported his goal. That goal was to make SIU a 1st class athletic institution. He wasn't interested in being a mid major. He said our new scoreboard was a division 1 quality system unlike the division 4 scoreboard they replaced. He said the new scoreboard for soccer was also a division 1 addition. The new football field and new basketball floor were 1st class. He said you'll notice other improvements when ESPN broadcasts from the Banterra Center. He didn't mention the new baseball upgrades but he made it clear he wants SIU to be 1st class in all sports and have 1st class facilities. He said they are going inside and outside the region for donations to make it happen. He was very positive on the future of SIU athletics.

Don't know if anyone saw the Youngstown-Samford game. Youngstown appears to have a very good running game and their 5th year QB Mays is back. They also have some good transfers - Vandy DB had two interceptions. I don't think Samford is very good, but YSU really dominated them on both sides of the ball, although they gave up some passing TDs in the 4th quarter. I think Bo's Mom was playing DB by that time.

My predictions: 1.They'll be a lot better than last year. 2. Bo Pellini will get angry! 😀  3. Bo Pellini will not be attending sensitivity training classes!

S. Dakota St. beating Minnesota in the 3rd quarter 21 - 20. I picked them to win the MVC this year - they are a really good FCS team with a lot of Big 10 type talent.

Looks like we're in for another dismal season. In the previous couple of seasons, I've been OK, thinking improvement was on the way, and it would just be a matter of patience.

But I see no progress--none.

Just watched UMass against Rutgers.  They are surprisingly a lot like we.  Offense runs RPO a lot.  Ran empty in many passing situations.  Ran Trips when they did.  Ran many 11 sets otherwise in pro sets.  A first year QB.  A pretty good RB.   Good OL, but not great.  Good TE.  Use him a lot as their H back.  Defense stinks on ice -- just like ours.  They mostly run a 4-3 with 2 deep.  DL is as pathetic as ours.  DE's can't set an edge either.  DT's get knocked 3-4 yards off the ball too.  Their LB's look exactly like ours.  Have velcro on their jerseys.  Never square any ball carrier up and make all their tackles by grabbing the ball carrier's ankles because they are running 2 yards behind them.  DB's run mostly man and can't defend without a PI call.  Their DC looked like Paulson from last year.  Ran basic D throughout the game without making any adjustments.  Must have the same philosophy as Paulson that they can win by using their faces to stop the other team's fists.  UMASS started out fast with a good 1st quarter, then got b***h slapped by a team with superior players for the final 3.  Sound familiar?

Having said this, we do have a chance to win if we can minimize our mistakes.

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

The apathy is what concerns me.

If a bunch of people were angry, I’d honestly feel better. We don’t have much in the way of anger. It’s acceptance. That’s concerning. It has to be to Jerry Kill.

@austinsaluki

Salukis did have a stroke of bad luck losing their leading tackler from last year, MLB Notree to a broken foot during pre game warm ups at Semo. Out 4-8 weeks.

Everyone has bad luck like that. Doesn't explain the lack of improvement elsewhere.

It just seems that we don't have the horses and that the learning curve was way too steep.

Cool gamble, but it's just not working out.

Bad luck or not, Nick Hill & Co. need to make some progress this season.  The first game didn't show any, none, zero.  That really, really sucks!

Latest FCS poll has SIU at #23 and one of the last 4 in the Bracketology list. A little premature considering our schedule but I'll take it.

Per Hefferman:

Blake Parzych (@blakeparz), one of 4 team captains, was involved in an altercation in Carbondale Thursday night/Friday night and was arrested. He has been charged w/2 misdemeanors, battery and disorderly conduct, and been suspended indefinitely from team activities.
