Although it wasn’t a very good call of the game on ESPN+, the bigger issue was the very shaky camerawork, missing a TD out of a commercial, etc.
I still keep the perspective of how incredible it is to have access to all these games compared to a couple decades back but it was a fairly tough watch.
And FWIW I think Martin will be great but he did botch his first TD call (said it was Hartrup instead of Strong). We’ll give him a mulligan. 😛
I was at the game. The announcer talked over Tim Leonard on the big screen a couple of times. They were out of sync. LOL
I watched a little of the ESPN+ when I got home (with a Quatros Challenge!!) - couldn't get enough of the Salukis' blowout. Although the camera work (by students) isn't great and Hoscher is awful, it is nice to be able to get so many games in different sports on ESPN+. Well worth the $10/month IMO. I usually stop it for the summer months.
I'm catching a bit of women's soccer at Lindenwood right now. 0 - 0 at half.
This was the first time I have ever listened to an entire SIU radio feed for 3 hours plus, on top of a TV feed, which was about 25 seconds behind.
It helped that we beat them real bad from the start.
I just can’t listen to something that terrible, even though we all have before.
We won. That’s what matters most.

Highlights
Just watched the ESPN replay. I didn’t think the announcers were terrible. Maybe not great, but way better than I was anticipating after reading some of these comments. The camera work / video in general was very bad and needs some attention before the next game. I was at the game and will say the ESPN announcers were a lot easier to listen to than the PA announcer.

I agree with this. Had to watch the second half at home (son was done after the first half). They missed any play to the close side of the field (either zoomed in too much or slow to pan). These are kids learning so you have to give them a break. If there isn’t improvement next game, then you might have a problem. Announcers were fine IMO.
Really good start to the season, I really liked the team speed overall, looking forward to that SEMO game. If they can get that win, could be a pretty good season
A few thoughts about the game.
- Defense dominated this game. Feels like Coach James likes to blitz, or at least that was his game plan for this game. AP didn't really have an answer until the second string made an appearance. I love the results obviously, but against a team that can actually pick up blitzes, it can certainly leave you vulnerable in the secondary.
- Offense was solid, they were able to sustain quite a few long drives, but lacked a bit of explosiveness in the first half. Baker was pretty efficient, but seemed a bit off on the night. He missed a handful of throws high, one of which would have been in walk-in TD and a couple balls where the receivers made really good catches. He'll need to clean that up, but he was awesome at extending plays and making the D pay for not getting home.
- I still have some concerns about the offensive line. Especially on the right side, there were too many times where they either missed their assignment or missed their block. Run game was okay, but we didn't really have any big runs...longest was 14 yards (part of that is on the RBs as well). Felt like there were some holes open initially, but didn't block very well at the second level.
- Skill position group looks to be loaded. Lots of guys who are dangerous in space. WR seemed to struggle a bit blocking those quick bubble screens/swing passes to RB so hopefully that improves, but overall a really good day.
Overall I was really happy to see them dominate that game so soundly. I don't know if AP would have scored a TD if the first team D stayed in the entire game. Hopefully they are able to keep this momentum going and get a big W up north.
Great start for Baker and the offense. Weapons and depth. Defense is ridiculously good. Defense gave offense field position all night. Stay healthy.
Baker has to stay healthy after watching the 4th quarter. Wish we could have seen Lindauer and the younger Baker after the 1st two series in the 4th quarter were so bad.

I thought Lindauer would get in in the 4th, but Simmons played the whole 4th qtr. Wasn't great but finally got a TD drive, helped by some AP penalties.
AP tried to run back every kickoff until 4th qtr, even though most were right at the goal line or in the end zone. Stupid because they started out in terrible field position most of the game - 15 yd. line or less. Could not believe their coach didn't correct that after the first three bad field positions. Their returners continued to make this bad decision and not until late in the 3rd did they start out with a chance..and finally got a FG.
4th qtr was a different deal. They could move the ball against our 2nd team, but they also had good field position because we couldn't get a 1st down.
I think with our first team D, they would never have scored a TD.
Looking forward to Saturday’s game at NIU! NIU appears to be much improved with the win over BC last Saturday. SIU will have to step up if they want a shot at winning this one.
A couple articles from the PrairieStatePigskin.com on the game:

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
SIU dominated Austin Peay way more than Tennessee. Tennessee had to play their starters the entire game. Austin Peay looked much better against Tennessee. I'm sure AP was way more fired up to play Tennessee, but still this may be a very good indication of what kind of football team Southern can be this year. I know every game and matchup is different, but so far I like what I see!
