Poll was about what I was expecting (in my head 5th). A few things that stood out to me

  • who’s the person voting Missouri State first?!?
  • Surprised to see UNI picked that low…has to be one of the lowest preseason picks for them no? I wonder if they would ever entertain moving on from Farley if he’s unable to get them back to the playoffs soon.
  • We were picked 4th but had zero people on 1st team. I think/hope they are sleeping on Fenske. We need a big year from him.
  • Looks like folks are higher on IL St. and not so much on YSU. Deadbirds do return most of a solid D. If they don’t make the playoffs, this may be it for Spack.

I'm assuming DJ Williams will be the starting QB, but has anybody looked at the HUDL video of freshman Jake Curry from E'ville?  He was the 1st team 8A All-State QB (that's the biggest schools), and I Really like what I see on those highlights - a really mobile QB with great field vision who throws some just great passes.

Kind of disappointing to not have a single player on the 1st team MVFC, but I don't think those preseason things mean much.

Take it for what it’s worth.  I’m not putting too much stock in preseason predictions.  I think SIU’s defense should be in good shape.  Hoping that we give the starting QB job to someone that can sling it.

Dawg Football guys just came out with their Fall Camp podcast. Hard to believe football season is almost here.

Simmons has elevated his game. Moving well and throwing the ball all over with zip. I’d be shocked if he’s not QB 1. DJ plays well when it’s off-script but has struggled with pre-snap reads.
Don’t be surprised if the young QB from Louisville area is moved to different position come next season. Next level speed.

Anyone able to watch or get reports on first scrimmage? I listened to Hill’s review and got basically nothing from it haha. Did notice a goaline pick thrown by DJ and a TD pass. Looked like Hunter had a couple nice throws.

From highlights it looked like Jay Jones had multiple big plays. Never have understood why he's not played

Simmons was extremely sharp. Big time throws. DJ was good and young ET had two explosive runs before getting a little banged up on a sack.
Simmons has clearly come to camp ready to lead this team from under center. Hope he can stay healthy.

Hard not to feel pretty good about the OL after listening to this preview with Dan Clark.

No matter the QB this offense will be built around the run and we have the OLine to do so for sure

Does anyone think Hill announces the starting QB before week 1? I think he’ll know before then obviously, but maybe he plays it close to the vest as a bit of gamesmanship.

I don’t think he’ll play a two QB system, or I sure hope he doesn't. Maybe a wildcat formation here or there.

There is an old saying if you play two QBs you don't have one I believe he will pick one and go with whoever it is so that person can get the majority of first team reps

@jabman62 I agree. I think I saw ISU Red was publicly saying they were going to play a 2 QB system this year. I guess we will find out soon enough if Spack was serious about that. Maybe early on they do…have a relatively weak non-con so they could probably get away with it. I think come conference time they are going to have to settle on one.
