Illinois State rejoins the football universe after going 1-3 and quitting last season. This season, Illinois State is currently sitting at 2-1 with wins over Butler and Eastern Illinois and a loss to MAC Western Michigan. Illinois State was picked 7th in the preseason MVFC poll.
The Redbirds are coached by Brock Spack who is in his 13th season. Spack has led Illinois State to the FCS playoffs five times including the FCS Championship in 2014.
Redbirds to watch:
Illinois State's QB entering the season was Sophomore Bryce Jefferson but he was injured last week against Eastern Illinois and it seems like he's not going to play this week. The Redbirds back-up QB is 6'3 Freshman Jackson Waring. Last week against Eastern Illinois, Waring went 5-7 passing for 33 yards and added 10 rushes for 15 yards including 2 fumbles, 1 lost.
The Redbirds leading rusher last week was 6'0 Redshirt Freshman Cole Mueller. He rushed for 144 yards on 16 carries against Eastern Illinois and had 8 rushes for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns against Butler in Week 1.
6'4 defensive lineman Braydon Deming, a transfer from Montana, was named MVFC Defensive Player of the Week last week for his 10 tackle game against Eastern Illinois.

Illinois State Game Notes
Looks like a big recruiting weekend based on what I see on Twitter. A big win against ISU to start the season 3-1 could go a long way.
SIU should win this easily. Gotta ge to 8 wins again this year to make the playoffs. Hoping to see them keep up the pace

I think 7-4 probably gets us in with our schedule. We play 4 top 20 teams and K State. 8 wins probably gets us at least 1 home playoff game.
CB James Ceasar is out for the year according to his Twitter. Pretty big loss.
Also Tulsa transfer Jauan Blankenship is transferring:

From his and Nick Hill's statement, it seems like James Ceasar loves the program and the coaching staff. Nothing but great things to say about one another. Hopefull Ceasar sticks in the NFL - he and Jeremy Chinn promoting the Dawgs every weekend would be fantastic for the program.
A little birdie just told me you should all check the football roster for DJ Johnson . A cornerback from Iowa 😁
I would love to pound the Redchickens into the turf. I suspect that Spackle quit the season last year so they wouldn't get their a s s kicked by us and would also hurt our chances of making the playoffs.
But don't underestimate them. They have come in here before expecting to lose and done a number on us! They will be psyched.
Massey is picking us by just 12.

Give the points.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
Nick wants to ram it up their ass worse than Dayton. This could be ugly

I like the sentiment and I hope it happens, but I think Illinois State is a little better on D than Dayton. I've disliked the Redbirds for a long time, but after their fanbase (mostly their student section) taunted Kill as he was being taken off the field on a stretcher after one of his seizures, I always hope we stick it to them every time we play.
So ram it up their ass Nick!
