Does anyone know when Mike became the play-by-play man. I started at SIU in 77 and I remember Mike was doing the games that year. I'm guessing 46 or 47 years.
According to his bio on Siu athletics page the 2021 2022 season is his 43rd
Thanks for the info but I'm sure he was doing the games in 77. The mind must be playing tricks on me.
Maybe he was doing some part time announcing before becoming The Voice of The Salukis and he has been great cant imagine anyone else doing the job

Seems to me that he graduated around 77 so maybe he was still a student then.
I believe Ron Hines was the radio play by play announcer for SIU before Mike. He is from Carterville and went on to be the long time SID at SEMO. Back then WJPF in Herrin had the rights to SIU play by play. I used to listen to the away games on the radio as a kid. I believe Mike took over in 1978.

I think you're right. Bill Criswell was around like in the early 70's. For whatever reason, I remember a game back then when SIU was playing at the University of Detroit and Criswell was up in arms about their crazy coach named Dick Vitale.
back in the late 70's, both WCIL and WSIU did saluki games on the radio. criswell was the WSIU play by play guy, and R/T students got the chance to do color at home games. this spawned many an illustrious career. one time, in the middle of a game at tulsa, someone stole the WSIU banner in front of the table where criswell was announcing. you hear bill holler "hey!" then he took the headset off, and chased the vilain through the building. back home, we are all listening in the dorm to 10 minutes of natural sound. finally, criswell returns, banner in hand, and proceeds to tell the story of the great chase for the next 10 minutes. no mention of the score.
Rick Rizzs, longtime Mariner announcer, started with Bill.
