Shouldn't kids be back in college for fall semester?  Bars are open, protests are blessed events, beaches open, college aged kids mostly immune to direct consequence, etc.  If the kids are in school, then why not sports?

College kids might be immune to the virus but what about professors, people in the local community.  If there was a way to keep kids on campus and in town, maybe it would work.  But if kids go home to Chicago and bring back the virus, you're looking at another wave.

bars, food outlets, church, protests, etc. all ok then?

No, Americans have been selfish since this virus got here.  If we took it seriously back in March, we'd be in much different shape right now.  Just have to look at literally any other country out there sans Brazil, who also didn't take it seriously.

so going to school is selfish and engaging in those other activities I mentioned are virtuous?

To be fair, I'm not sure being "selfish" is the only thing that would describe our problem here.  There is a huge (and growing) distrust between a lot of people and the media here.  While wearing a mask does help slow the spread, it is not difficult to see why several people do not believe the media on anything anymore.  Therefore, causing people not to take these orders seriously.

This seems like more of a distrust in science than a distrust in the media, which is another problem.

Our science folks need to be forthcoming when they don't know the answer vs. just improvising.  My faith in the whole field of epidemiology is down the drain.  There are a lot of $200k+ pandemic people that need to be GS-12s.

Since apparently the rules about political posts have been relaxed, given what Morris and Dawg keep getting allowed to post, I might as well throw a few thoughts out there while the rules have been suspended.

What have they not been forthcoming about? I really don't recall anyone--well, not actual scientists anyway--claiming to know exactly what would happen. In fact, it's always couched in what "could" happen, as a worst-case scenario. Epidemiologists have consistently said from day one that this is a new thing that they don't really know much about, and that it is an ongoing process of learning as we go. And lacking that precise knowledge, they have cautioned taking the most radical approach to trying to shut it down, because we just don't know. That is what is known as prudence.

Epidemiologists warned of a global pandemic, which is what we have. Epidemiologists suggested that shutting down and social distancing would slow down or halt the pandemic, and they have been correct wherever those steps have actually been taken in full measure. There is a definite correlation between not taking this seriously and the number of hospitalizations and deaths. Lack of prudence=lack of success. It's really that simple.

By the way, here are today's figures. As usual, we're not looking great:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Please provide examples of what has caused this crisis of "faith" (which is a crap word to use in regard to science).

Please also explain your "faith" in leaders who have completely (as you apparently have) written this off. Example from February 26: "And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done."  https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-vice-president-pence-members-coronavirus-task-force-press-conference/

(Please note the source.)

Maybe you have "faith" in THIS scientist, whose views were retweeted by our scientist-in-chief?

https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/report-texas-doctor-who-went-viral-with-unproven-covid-19-cure-believes-in-demon-sperm

And why should we maybe not be so gung-ho about throwing caution to the wind? Ask the Miami Marlins.

I could go on and on. LOL

REEEEE REEEEE REEEEEE

Translation: "I"ve been owned, and this is all I could come up with."

Note there is not even a single attempt at refutation. Not even ONE. This is what dumb people think of as a "rebuttal." 😆

I think my work is finished here. 🙂

Edit: Going to take a wild guess here: this is the post that will make the mods decide that things are "political," even though they have been so from the get-go. 🙂

Looks like Austin has been posting facts to me.  Going back to the original point, if this country had acted responsibly, we would have Fall sports.  This is not a political statement, it is simply the truth.  To answer a previous poster’s question: bars, restaurants, church, etc. should be okay if people wear masks, are adequately distanced, and outside wherever possible.  It is not possible to avoid transmission in college dorms and in football, so I don’t see why America has earned the right to watch football.  We know the only reason schools are bringing students back to the dorms: $$$

And the children say "REE-REE-REE."

That is why we US citizens are banned from most of the civilized world.
