@beadmedaddio You have always been very knowledgeable regarding football. I am guessing you played for Southern at one time or were involved in some capacity. Do you think coach Hill prefers to have a pro style QB as a starter? I always thought that was his preference, and of course that was his style when he played. He also seems to be recruiting that way lately.

I went to SIU to play baseball.  But I did scout both baseball and football and coached both too.  My coaching only went as high as D3 in football and JC in baseball.  Now to Nick.

Most of us always gravitate to what we like or are comfortable with.  Simply a human condition.  That's why self scouting for tendencies is so important.  We always tend to return home.  Keeping the other side guessing is invaluable.  Everyone has heard this.  Nick was a pro style pocket passer.  Standing tall and climbing the pocket vertically was what he was always taught.  Is this style of player preferable to him.  Probably, but I don't know the man so I'm merely speculating.  But that's why I get the big bucks.

Labanowitz will be hard to beat out. Hard to argue with 72% completion percentage and winning. He gets it done.

How many QBs we have NOW?  5 or 6?

By my count - 8.  And I didn’t even have to take my shoes off.  Much too crowded.  Two or three will transfer.

In my opinion the 3 with the best pedigree's on paper are Foss, Norton and Lindauer. I like the grit and toughness of both Stone L and Baker. Also, they both played well for us this year. However, they are both about 5'8" and have to scramble out of the pocket to see downfield most of the time. This is a big disadvantage, and teams can scheme against it easily. Also Stone L's arm is not exactly strong. We rarely threw downfield with him. If we want to take our program to the next level I would guess one of the 3 pro style QB's I mentioned above may end up distinguishing themselves in practice and starting. All 3 have great size and big arms.

Gonna have to be a darn good QB to beat out SL or Nic Baker. SL did throw downfield. Great long TDs to Cox against SDSU and SEL. He scrambled out of the pocket many times because he was about to get sacked - SDSU!! Much rather have a guy that makes plays, thinks on his feet, and is accurate than a big arm. His arm is big enough - made a lot of great passes in the playoffs. Reminds me of Joel Sambursky in some ways. Not as good a runner but a more accurate passer. He runs the team with confidence and the players believe in him. Feel the same about Nic Baker. SL is 5' 10" BTW.

Nick Hill btw loves Stone Labanowitz, his confidence, his attitude, the way he runs the team. I'll be very surprised if he isn't the starter next Fall, assuming he comes back.

Michael Lindauer originally committed to SIU then backed out when Cincy offered him. He was the #3 QB at Cincy but barely played. HS teammate and cousin of Branson Coombs. 6' 3" pro style QB. His Dad played baseball at Mo. State.

We will have 7 QBs on the roster since Lyles is gone. That is ridiculous IMO. We need to more RBs, OLs, DLs, and linebackers. Wouldn't be surprised to see another QB leave!

Simmons would make 8. Foss and Simmons will be redshirted I would imagine. Guessing Simmons brought in as a scout team type QB with Hill already having Foss in that class. Signing Lindauer this late in the cycle IMO is not to come in and sit behind 3 guys. Not sure you bring in a FBS transfer in May that’s same age as Baker and Norton to sit. SL should be QB1 going into camp but after that I’m guessing it’s free game.

Stone L and Nick B are shorter than they are listed. I have stood next to both of them. I like Stone L, but he is limited with his arm. I mentioned he didn't really throw downfield and I stand by that. He threw a pass over 20 yards once or twice game. Most of the big gains were a result of our talented receivers running after the catch. I like Stone L and he absolutely got the most out of what god gave him. He has guts and good instincts. However, there is a ceiling to what he can do and teams can more successfully scheme against it the longer he is the starter. When practice starts Stone L may go in as #1 and Nick B may be #2, but I would not be surprised at all that by late August Lindauer and Norton are #'s 1 & 2. Lindauer may have been 3rd on the depth chart at Cinci, but Cinci was one of best FBS teams in the country last year! They went 9-0 in the regular season and lost to Georgia by 3 point in the Peach Bowl. A game they should have won!!!!

Forgot about Simmons - 6' 4" and a big arm!  Too many QBs to choose from. Crazy! Surprised Illinois isn't raiding our QBs, since it's been years since they had a good one!

For those concerned about arm strength, remember a guy named  Joe Montana?  described himself as throwing balloons at dart! Touch, poise, reading defenses, deception, accuracy are far more important.

Arm strength is not absolutely essential at this level.  Most db’s are a step slower.  But it’s great to be able to throw outside of the hashmarks.  I would argue accuracy is more important.  When I was scouting, we would have a certain size imaginary box that a qb had to be able to throw into.  At all distances. High school was 4x4 feet, college was 3x3 feet, and I didn’t scout pro, but it was 2x2 feet.  The mental aspect is an entirely different ball game (pun intended).

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

QB room should be interesting. Almost up to the add on game with LA it seemed Hill was searching for a spark from that position. SL seemed to give us that. Great game planning by Hill along with some solid play from SL. Moving forward, winning the MVC and a deep playoff run is the next step for the Dawgs. SL, SN, NB, and ML should have a fun summer. I feel like if Hill was comfortable with that position after watching spring football and some practices he would have left QB room as is. JMO. Norton and Lindauer are same age which you rarely see in today’s CFB. Either way the program benefits when there is a good QB room top to bottom. Competition never hurt anyone!!

Stone Norton arrived on campus a few days after New Years and he would have started on Feb 20th at North Dakota if he were eligible.  I don't think there will be much competition for who's starting against SEMO on Sept 2nd.  If there is, it will be by Lindauer.  These guys are head and shoulders better than our QB's last year.  Nothing against them personally, but it's a different level.

That would be great .... but hard to believe. I checked out Norton's games at FIU - not that impressive on a bad team that lost all 5 games, including to FCS Jacksonville State (5 for 14 and 66yds). 25 for 52 in 5 games - 48%. Started the 1st game, his best, and went 9 for 13 against Liberty. Split time with two other QBs. Apparently started a couple of games but not the last two.

Lindauer barely played at Cincy so hard to tell, but they were a good team.

Every QB on our roster had a great HS career.

Pretty sure my statement wasn't opinion. 🙃
