I don’t know if there’s much difference between playing a D2 and another MEAC or OVC opponent. It’s actually less harmful from a metrics standpoint. That said, with two fewer noncon games to schedule now, I don’t see why they’d need to do that.
My bigger issue in recent years has been the shortage or complete absence of a marquee noncon home game, with SLU apparently unwilling to come to Carbondale (still haven’t seen an explanation on that one). The coaches/administration have to find a way to pull in an occasional home game against an A-10/MWC/AAC type opponent as several other MVC programs continue to be able to do.
SLU is coming next year from what i understand. We cancelled the game with them last year or they would have been here. I haven't seen anything about them not being willing to come here.

Winners bring winners
That's what I said last year. Many were complaining about the weak schedule and SIU didn't win despite that schedule. If you build it (winning program), they will come. I believe the team will win this year and I believe the schedule next year will reflect that.

As of a week ago SIU didn’t have a full non conference schedule. Last year If you recall we were one game short of a full schedule of non conference games and the pandemic was blamed. We ended up with a very poor schedule rated 311 out of an approximately 360 of D1 schools. This year with the expectations of Mullins best team yet with less than two months before the season and with two less games to schedule we are still struggling to get a competitive non conference schedule. Still hoping he pulls a rabbit out of his hat but it doesn’t look good.

Last year we got really lucky San Francisco was as good as they were. First off, we were supposed to play them in 2020 but obviously got postponed a year because of COVID. We did not anticipate that being easily our best game when that home and home was scheduled. So the schedule easily could have been worse last year. We really might see that this year.

Thanks for the update. And I'll consider our midmajor status if you consider that the team is heavy on seniors and the fan base is more than a bit antsy to return to postseason play since it's been 15 years and counting. 😀

🤔 another insightful post. Eventually you are going to be right and the schedule will come out. I don't think most Saluki fans will be happy with it unless you like playing bad teams at home, and any good to decent opponents on the road.
