It’s not about defense or match ups this year. It’s going to be about who can score the most points and who can put the ball in the basket.
We do not have a true 5 that can start in my eyes. Both freshman are great young talents but have to ease their way into d1 ball, if not redshirt. Webber probably could give you 5-10 min a game and be fine but I don’t see much more than that. This offense is going to be super fast paced and I’m just scratching my head at the center situation. I hope I am wrong but I just don’t think we have what we need. I would not be totally against red shirting both freshman and getting another center out of the portal. Then having Moreno as the backup and Hensley as the small lineup 5. In regards to pg I would like to see us get one. With that being said I wouldn’t hate to see Dibba, Steffe, Kenard, and Sykes all starting. Great athletes! I’m more concerned with our center position, Nagy is suppose to be an expert with developing bigs. With what he has done so far I trust him 100 percent.
You have a valid point to be concerned about the 5 spot. I wouldn't be surprised to see the last two roster spots taken by a true center who can effectively stretch the floor (imagine how Avila would look on this roster) and a PG. However, if there's no further additions at the 5, I firmly believe we'll be seeing Webber for more than 5-10 minutes a game.
I also think Hensley at the 5 at times makes some sense. We have to get out of the mindset that we're going to see anything even remotely resembling what we saw the last five years regarding play style. Hensley at the 5 would give us 5 guys who can shoot it or put it on the deck and get to the rim effectively -- spreading teams out and forcing the opposition with any true 5 to make tough personnel decisions, much like other teams forced on us in the past. It'd be a very modern look and one we'll probably use, IMO.

You're right, i don't think he would play much. He would be a guy you would bring in just for a few minutes here and there when you needed a three and wanted to run some set plays to get him open. But there's going to be guys not playing much. We aren't going to play 13 man rotation. I feel like you all think i really love Wonders or something. Really i don't. You are all correct in that he is slow and can't play defense. But several have mentioned our lack of pure shooters, and he would fit that bill as an off the bench guy for a few minutes here and there. I really couldn't care less if he comes back here or not. I'm sure there are other guys in the portal that are just as good or better. I was just originally pointing out that I'd be fine with him coming back here as a bench piece if he wanted to come back to the MVC, which he probably doesn't want to do anyway.Hard pass on Wonders. He wouldn't play on this team. Not over Dibba, Mayo, Steffe, etc
This board seems to be experiencing a premature exultation.

Yeah, guys are getting the cart way in front of the horse for a team that doesn't have an experienced point guard and has huge questions at the 5 spot. I get it, love the guys we've gotten and I'm excited to see how it comes together. But predicting top 4 finishes and stuff for a bunch of guys that don't know each other and have never played together is a bit of a stretch. hahaThis board seems to be experiencing a premature exultation.

That would be a good pickup. Would have 2 years left to allow Sharp to develop and had a great Asst/TO 2.8/0.8 last year. Needs the FG/3pt % to go up, but he should have plenty of weapons to help.
I’m a little worried about outside shooting at the moment (surely some of these guys improve next year), but lots of folks who can break people down and get to the rim.
his turnover ratio was 2.8/2.4 , not sure where you saw 0.8https://twitter.com/Dawgs_MBB/status/1791838661320827015?t=G3Ec4qLrXSgLh2ioMURSRw&s=19

This team is no more less proven than the rest of the Valley. Sans Bradley I guess

I mixed up years…it was indeed 2.4 last year.
Not sure we have the outside shooting we need . Steffe hopefully but he’s never played at this level. But overall, pleased with our recruiting. We will know more in January.

The one thing I feel safe in predicting is that, barring injuries or other unforeseen circumstances, next season won't be a cluster-you-know-what along the lines of Gottfried's final season, or Lowery's (we won't see modern-day versions of Lawrence Stubblefield, Rob Kirsner and Kendall Brown-Surles running around the court). And given where this staff was starting out, with double-digit scholarships to fill, that's an accomplishment in itself. Beyond that, with all the new coaches, portal movement and upheaval in the conference, it's hard to say. A top-four finish is possible, but yes, a lot has to work itself out. As for the rest of the conference, I've been focused on what SIU has done in the portal and haven't watched the other schools too closely, so I don't really know who has done well or who is struggling with filling their scholarships. For sure, there will be quite a few teams in transition.

Ideally they bring in a transfer PG who also can help space the floor as a shooter. If not, you’re going to need guys like Davis, Hensley and maybe Bey to step up their perimeter shooting.

interesting that Sykes committed without ever visiting campus. I’d guess SIU has a really good shot at Mason with the Sykes connection
