Mullins navigation of the portal this past season was probably his undoing.
He replaced 2 Big Ten starters with 4 guys who have no business being on an MVC roster.
It was disasterous.
Maybe not 4, but I basically agree. He wasn't a great recruiter or game coach. YET.
Yeah, I would leave Hensley out of that conversation. The other three? No argument here.
Hensley was a senior who struggled to shoot, barely averaged 5 ppg, and couldn't rebound for shit.
If he is a MVC level player or what you consider a portal success story then SIU will never make the NCAA tournament again.
Where do you make this stuff up? He shot 37% from 3. That's perfectly fine lol Hensley was brought in to be a role player and was a fine one. He's not a success story. But was a fine player given what realistic expectations should have been for him
You continue to bat .1000 on your hot takes, but not in a good way. Your analysis is always ridiculous.Mullins navigation of the portal this past season was probably his undoing.

Also, Stulic played really well at the beginning of the season. He was getting about 15-20 minutes a game and was an asset. He did hit a big shooting slump and was pretty quickly pulled out of the rotation. I thought Bryan Mullins gave up on him too quickly. If he had continued to play him some I think he probably would have come out of his slump.Mullins navigation of the portal this past season was probably his undoing.

I'd like to see Hensley stick around -- he has one more year of eligibility, correct? He showed some real progress toward the end of the season and might be able to contribute more next season.
The one i look at is coach Spradlin, who a lot of us are thinking might be our next coach because of his "sustained success". Yet, look at how he started out at Morehead, 4 straight losing seasons and an overall record of 48-76. Finally year 5 broke out with a 23-8 season and an ncaa bid. But if he starts out like that for us, he will probably get fired. It def polarizing. There’s two dudes on twitter who are sharing coach k first five seasons as a reason we shouldn’t have gotten rid of Mullins. I can understand being upset but he’s not coach k
I think he can succeed a bit more quickly at SIU simply because it is a better job than Morehead State was (rated near the bottom of the OVC in a survey five years ago) when he took over, with a solid tradition, fan base and the like. Also, the article posted here a few days ago indicated that he knows his way around the portal, which certainly is what SIU needs in the short term. Alas, if he loses 76 games in his first four years on the job, you're almost certainly right.

Hensley was mostly used as a 5, which is why he struggled at times. Used properly, as a 4, I like him. He had some great blocks and a couple of double-digit scoring games at the end.
Spike, unlike a lot of people on here, I generally like hearing what you have to say. But you have a tendency toward hyperbole, especially when it comes to criticism. Your early-season statement about XJ, which was similarly critical of his prior scoring stats, is a a case in point. (It was something to the effect that SIU was going to be in real trouble if they relied on him for scoring. That turned out to be somewhat true: we did rely on him too much, but NOT because he couldn't score.)
(Inflammatory political snark)
Not sure if it’s been said yet but….
Rupert to the portal
Since it's on Twitter, it MUST be official...

I knew it was probably going to happen, but hate to see #4 in a different uniform next season.
Beat of luck to Clarence, really enjoyed watching him play the last 2 years.
Ebube as well. Should be a fun transfer portal season for us. Able to offer power 5 transfers immediate guaranteed playing time.
Damn. Still nothing from Scottie, but you have to assume that’s coming.
I’m hopeful that SIU pulls off an impressive hire who reaches out to some of our guys and convinces them to come back. They chose Southern over several other places, so they have to have some affinity for it. Maybe all it takes is a discussion with the new coach.

fun ? Not the word I am choosing
Well that leaves no starters from this years team and several key back ups gone.

What’s done is done and I’ve accepted it though I wanted Mullins to stay. Just trying to look forward and recruiting season can be exciting if for no other reason than it will inspire hope. May be able to attract a big piece with so many spots open.
