The next big conversations…who stays, who goes. Going to be a long offseason.

Moreno had a couple amazing post moves today. It's been noted he has only been playing basketball for a relatively short time. I think he could take an even bigger step forward over the summer and fall and be a key contributor next year. Also, Steffe has taken a huge step forward in the last 12 games or so. I think Massey is gone. Wouldn't be surprised to see Sharp and Bey also transfer. I would be happy keeping everyone else and adding a good portal PG and PF along with the 2 incoming freshman. I'm probably dreaming if I think we will only lose 3 fairly non consequential players, but what the heck.

This team isn't tough enough or very good defensively to compete in the valley you have to play defense rebound be physical and mentally tough until this group of players or any new players don't buy into this concept it will be hard to be successful

If I had to guess right now:

  • Bey: not sure what happened here, but he’s not been on the bench for awhile
  • Sharp: playing time
  • Massey: playing time
  • KD: unfortunate, but someone is going to pay him more than we can.
  • Dibba: see above
  • Elliot: given Dibba and KD gone, he’s not wasting his last year here

I don’t love this list, but that’s the reality these days. I think we are going to have another roster rebuild. Hopefully we are more successful this year.

If this scenario plays out, our returning players would be Mayo, Steffe, Sykes, Aligbe and Moreno. In addition, Webber will be a redshirt freshman and two high school recruits will come aboard, with Walsh probably the most likely of the two to contribute immediately. There's some potential among that group, but clearly the staff will need to do a lot of heavy lifting in the portal, with possible additions from high schools and jucos. One thing that appears certain is that the annual search for a point guard (and depth at the position) will continue. In the bigger picture, there's potential for a lot of upheaval around the Valley, just as there was last year, but I'll probably wait until after Arch Madness to post on what could happen. Prohm already is out at Murray State -- no big surprise there.

I say all bets are off in the portal era. No one has a crystal ball when it comes to players staying or going.

In today's postgame, Nagy stressed the necessity of players sticking with the program through good and bad if we are going to become successful.  If we can keep Moo, Dibba, Elliott (and I'll add Bey to that list) we could be really good next year.  We'll need Steffe, Aligbe, & Warren to keep developing.  Mayo and Sykes can be glue players.

Those are the players I'd like to keep in a perfect scenario.  Add the two incoming Freshmen and that's 11.  We need a big enforcer (like Banks was against us today) and sorry, but I don't think Moreno is it.  We could also use a true point guard (not Sharp) or at least a scoring combo guard.

I thought it was a bit odd that Elliott didn’t appear to be in St. Louis. You’d think you’d want a team leader to experience an Arch Madness if he were coming back?

@siudawgs No clue, as usual, but maybe out for rehab purposes? Lots of speculation to follow of course.

March on triumphantly!

Agree with all of this. Need PG depth at the least, assuming Elliott is back, and a competent, experienced anchor at the 5. Infuse that with a boost to three point shooting, which I'm hoping Walsh will help with, and we could be looking at a big turnaround.

Lots of ifs, but I still believe SIU and its basketball program has lots to offer comparatively, so I'm hopeful.

I agree with everything except the Moreno sentiment. He improved greatly over the course of the year and is a real presence inside with his size. He hasn't been playing basketball for that long and will continue to improve. I think he, Aligbe and Weber would be a very decent 3 headed monster at the 5. Aligbe will continue to improve also. Aligbe has more range and can really run the floor so he is a good compliment to the back to the basket games of Weber and Moreno. With everyone coming back that we want, yes big if, I think the greatest need is at PG(1) and PF(4) positions.

Have heard rumors that a lot of the players really enjoy playing for Nagy. He’s not a bullshitter and it’s apparently appreciated by the players a lot. Wouldn’t expect that in this day and age of soft coaches

I like Moreno and he will be better next year. Can't coach big!

The bigs situation will be interesting. I expect Webber to stay and play after his redshirt year. Aligbe and Moreno both showed enough to where I’d assume they’d be welcome back, and I think both have some upside, but in this portal era, who knows if one or both might transfer to be closer to home or for whatever other reason.

And even if all three return, I’m not convinced the staff would be totally sold on any as a surefire starter at a position Nagy really values, so who knows if they try to invest big dollars in a transfer big — probably a longshot but if they have a relationship with the right guy … ?
