This portal shit is crazy and really terrible for college athletics.
I’m crossing my fingers we don’t hear of any more from Southern, however unlikely that is. I’m a little surprised Davis is the only one so far.
I am beginning to think that the formula for success for mid majors these days is to have 8 to 10 moderately better than average kids on your roster and keep them all until they graduate.
Bradley has the best formula. Develop and retain your talent and if you do lose someone to the portal, go out and reload in the portal. And they’ve lost good players like Mast to Nebraska but they just keep reloading.
A key distinction with Bradley is they did the hard part (rebuilding) prior to the current landscape of NIL and transfer portal. They were able to keep their core together and win with 4th and 5th year guys. It’s easier to convince kids to come to a program to sustain it than it is to build it (not that it can’t be done obviously). Bradley has definitely done a great job of keeping it going in the portal era. Same goes for Drake, the coach having an NBA caliber player as a son doesn’t hurt either.
If this is going to be the way moving forward, we have to get to the point where we have contracts and buyouts. Reward the teams that are doing the development and have some ability to protect your roster.
I know I'm in the minority but I don't really care if Dibba or Elliot come back. There is nothing interesting about watching 24 and 25 year olds play college basketball.

With JUCO players getting an extra year, it's not going away anytime soon. SIU shouldn't put themselves at a serious disadvantage because you don't want to see 24 year olds in College Basketball

I hate this era of college basketball.

On another note, Davis seems like such a natural fit for Purdue. As much as I wish he'd reconsider and stay at SIU, he's the type of two-way player that could put the choo choo's over the top next year.

I expect Massey and Bey to enter, too
If it's just Davis, Massey, Bey and Sharp that would probably be a pretty decent result considering the present ncaa transfer culture. I would like to keep Elliott, Aligbe, Moreno, Dibba, Steffe, Mayo, Sykes and Webber. That would leave room to pick up 3 players in the portal after the 2 freshman. We won't go beyond 13 scholarships even if it's allowed.I expect Massey and Bey to enter, too

Well, with Hensley graduating and Davis and Sharp portaling, looks like Year 2 will be entirely Nagy recruits.
Sharp had a golden opportunity last season with the lack of point guards on the roster, and he helped some at times, but couldn't really take advantage of the opportunity and really struggled late in the season. I think he can have some success in the Horizon, OVC, etc., but it was pretty evident he wasn't the answer at PG.

Steffe officially coming back. I would expect that Sykes will also as they are close friends. Good news, hope there's more to come.

They are friends, but Sykes’ playing time was very different than Steffe’s, and I’d imagine Sykes will want to talk through how Nagy sees his role going forward. Wouldn’t be too surprised either way with Sykes.
Sykes had defensive lapses. When he played better defense, which he is very capable of he played decent minutes. I think Nagy's message will be you'll play if your defense is solid. Sykes can be a valuable player. He has good handles for a PF, is a good passer, rebounder and athletic.https://x.com/DrewSteffe/status/1902038521969357000
