He would have had to apply for a waiver, correct?
Unfortunately, I think you are on the right track here.
Evansville AD refused to cooperate in the waiver process. If they were to grant Smith his full release he would have been able to play right away just like his teammate Mark Smith. Underwood & Illinois AD Whitman granted Smith his full release and he never had to sit out without a coaching change. If Cook wanted to leave he could have left.

I know what happened. I’m just pointing out there’s no ncaa rule that you get to transfer without penalty if your coach leaves.
With senior day fast-approaching, wondering if we'll get any finality on Aaron's mindset regarding next year. Ideally, it'd be great to hear him say sometime soon that he fully intends to be back next season (and hopefully lead this group to a big year!)
Cook still would need to be granted the medical hardship waiver which probably doesn’t get heard until June
So will he be part of senior night or wait till next year?

Yes...

Was listening to Bryan’s press conference today and Aaron will not be having a Senior Night presentation. Shows how confident they are in Cook getting the medical redshirt and I would think that’s good news for him coming back.
@salukiworld I couldn't agree more! If he wasn't going to stick around he would definitely be honored tonight for senior night.
The first thing that comes to mind with Cook returning is having a dedicated person to handle the ball (PG duties), but there's also his defense. Then add the mentoring of Dalton Banks. Cook returning could be the difference to this team getting back to the post season (specifically NCAA or NIT).
Im sure I’m in the minority and I hope I’m wrong, but I believe we started playing better when Cook went to the sidelines. I know that the Fr were coming into their own but Aaron dribbles way to much and stops whatever flow we might actually have. Hope I’m wrong, maybe he’ll change but I’d be ok with him moving on. Nothing personal just an observation.
Cook brings a lot to the defensive end. Small sample size but I think he led all of college basketball in steal % in the 5 games he played. I’d imagine Mullins is a huge fan of that.
We didn't start playing better because Cook went to the sideline. We got better because it took time for this team to gel with all the newcomers and our first 5-6 games Cook was forced to create something at the end of the shot clock because nobody else was. Cook being out actually forced this team to figure it out on offense instead of relying on him. He is another guy that can get into the lane which is exactly what this team needs!!
