Well the bipolar board was in full blown depressive mode for most of this game I see. I got up at 4:30 this morning, drove non-stop from my home in Florida and went to the game. I had this intuitive feeling that I sometimes get about stuff, that the Salukis were going to win this game, period. The last 10 minutes of the game made it worth every one of the 652 miles. Yeah, we slacked for the other 30, but the defense the final 10 minutes was a thing of beauty. Domask put on an offensive clinic. OK. Cue up Jimi Hendrix, “Manic Depression” in 5,4,3…….

I disagree about the "effort" comment. I really didn't see anything lackadaisical; we just plain old SUCKED on O, and Alcorn was hitting their shots, pretty much all game.

Which is not to say we weren't awful; I just don't think we were lackadaisical.

But whatever: it was amazing to have won that game--I'm glad your trip wasn't a disappointment! Can we talk you into driving up for the rest of the home games? You're clearly providing good vibes! 😊😃

Disagree, the effort was awful in the first half.  Alcorn made a bunch of shots on good D but a small team was pounding the boards and getting rebounds.  A Valley team would have blown SIU out of the gym.  Effort was much better in the 2nd half.

Eh--agree to disagree. I didn't see what you saw, and you didn't see what I saw.

NBD. 😃

I’m gonna say that Alcorn isn’t as bad as their record. There. I did it. I’m the guy. But, honestly, they played everybody but Gonzaga and Washington State close.
Okay, that said, this is still all NOT VERY GOOD. I am raising my Saluki Concern Level (SCL) to a 7 out of 10. I am concerned.

You had an intuitive feeling that SIU was going to beat a bad 0-4 team at home?

And you’re making fun of mental illness?  LMFAO.

you, sir, are a hoot.

I sure did, from the beginning of of game to the bitter end. I do that sometimes. I am making fun of some of the outlandish statements of people on this board. Bipolar is the best way to describe it. Sorry to offend.

I am going to chalk this up to travel fatigue combined with three physical games.

Filewich really needs to be starting at the 5. When the team is struggling to score you can't have a guy who scored almost 10 ppg on the bench as a freshman especially when he was just getting into a scoring groove the game before.

This team really needs Brown back and in that 2 spot.

If Brown comes back by the two non-D1 games I wouldn't mind a starting 5 of Filewich/D'Amico/Domask/Brown/Jones just to see how they play together.

I think we need a Saluki Concern Level meter on the front page that aggregates everyone's SCL!

There were 2 little girls sitting in front of us who summed up one of our big problems, "Why don't we rebound like they do?" When they drove to the basket or threw up a 3, they crashed the board for the rebound, and if they didn't get it they still were able to get back on defense because we seldom fast break.

When one of our players shoots they never follow their shot and everybody immediately rushes back on defense. A friend of my son commented how much faster they were than SIU. Outside of Jones and Banks (who I thought looked good until he got bumped in the schnoze.) we have meh for speed. Our guys look strong and athletic, just not very quick.

Just a thought; For all their administrative problems and playing a gazillion road games prior to conference, Alcorn State played better than their record and are obviously well coached...even though we won we may have been out-coached last night.

1st half effort was very sluggish - no energy. Mullins did not like the effort in the 1st half.

Could very well have been hangover from the previous three tough games.

Verplancken barely shot the ball. We need more than Jones and Domask to score.

And Jones won't shoot FTs that bad in the future hopefully.

If Filewich could shoot FTs, I'd definitely play him more, but they were killing us inside and his D and quickness are not great.

If I were Mullins, I would absolutely be training Muila to shoot underhand FTs like Rick Barry (even though Bobber wouldn't like it!)

D'Amico certainly needs more run. As others have said, you can tell he belongs. There's potential there and I think its the kind of potential that can really help this team in a big way as the season progresses. He just hasn't had much floor time to get comfortable.

Verplancken, similar to Domask before the second half last night, needs to consistently be more aggressive offensively. This team needs him to score and probably be that third guy.

More consistency is needed from Coupet, too. He provides something this team desperately needs, but its only of real benefit if he's locked-in defensively, being disruptive and creating plays in transition. He's settling for too many 3's right now. That's not what we're needing from him.

I've never been sold on Filewich. I think he played a lot last year out of necessity. He has some ability on the blocks with his back to the basket, but he's a big liability defensively and athletically. He's a product of what I think is Mullins biggest coaching/team-building issue he has to resolve; being stuck somewhere in the middle of reincarnating the essence of what made SIU so good in the mid-2000's vs reconstructing elements of the recently formidable Loyola teams. Those are two very different things. Example: Filewich has no business hard hedging ball screens. That said, I think Filewich and Muila splitting time evenly is of SIU's best interests right now.

Also, Trent Brown back and healthy is sorely needed. His shooting, defense, and being a possible third relief option for bringing the ball up and starting the offense is missed more than I think we realize.

Last night made me want to vomit for 3/4 of the game, but I'm not overly concerned yet. I still think this group is playing its best basketball mid-January through the MVCt.

@gobluesaluki would rather they lost I will take any win we can get it. I rather point out problems after a win instead of a loss

Did we learn anything by winning this one, though?  Or is it that we don't have to show up for 30 minutes against a bad team and then do just enough to get a win?  That's a recipe for disaster.

We saw this in football.  We escaped with some wins that we should not have picked up, but appear to have learned nothing from it as evidenced by very poor, undisciplined play when we were fighting for a league title and a playoff seed.

This is very disturbing and our bench is down to almost nothing. We have seen this team rise to the occasion against the Pac-12 and Big East, and then get embarrassed by teams from the SWAC and the Sun Belt.  We should be past this by now.

Letting SIU basketball go for 5 days. It’s football time.

let the Saluki basketball team EARN being talked about.  They don’t deserve it right now.

im sure it’s a good group of guys, but this team does not look good at all.

enough with the excuses.  Making Brown out to be LeBron because he’s not playing.

*credit to him for being very good defensively last season**
