What exactly is wrong with Harvey ?
Word on the street is: complications from mono. Not to be taken lightly.
I heard it had something to do with his spleen.
Well, yes. I was trying to be more discreet.
They just released an interview with him discussing it.
Sounds like a medical redshirt to me. I don't see him coming back from this anytime soon. He should easily qualify, as he won't have played in any where near 30% of this seasons total games. We were giving him a hard time regarding his defense and effort, however with the disclosure of all he has been through and the lack of conditioning he has gotten, I think he definitely gets a pass. Really need Brown back soon! Someone mentioned removing the redshirt from Wonders, but if he isn't ready to play Saluki defense that redshirt is not coming off. A rotation of Muila, Domask, Coupet, Verplancken, Jones, Filewich, Banks, Brown, D'Amico and D'Avanzo should work fine. A 10 player rotation with more limited minutes for D'Avanzo and D'Amico. Right now a 9 man rotation with limited minutes for D'Amico and D'Avanzo is a little tight. Jones and Domask are playing too many minutes which will hurt us later on in the season.
Does the medical redshirt impact the extra COVID year he already got? Harvey already should be a Senior because he had to sit a year because of transferring.
Obviously his health is more important right now than basketball though
Academically, he is a senior. Eligibility wise, he has 3 years remaining, including this year. He sat out a year due to transfer. He did not lose that year of eligibility. He got an extra year due to covid, if he wishes to use it. Not sure if a medical redshirt would give him a 7th year. Usually the max is 6 years to complete 4 years of eligibility, and I don't know if covid allows for a 7th medical redshirt year to complete the 4. He may not want to go to school for that long anyway.

I think Jalen Coleman-Lands is in his 7th year because of the extra COVID year. He's the one example I can think of:
2015-16: Illinois Freshman
2016-17: Illinois Sophomore
2017-18: Redshirt due to transfer
2018-19: DePaul Junior, medical redshirt
2019-20: DePaul Senior
2020-21: Iowa State Senior
2021-22: Kansas Senior
Anyone who remembers or even looks back knows I was a huge fan of Harvey prior to him playing last year. After watching him struggle on defense, my expectations for him were significantly lowered this year. That being said, none of that is important compared to his health concerns. Thoughts and prayers to him and his return to full health.

10 scholarship players basically starting the season isn’t enough imo.

And really it’s nine until Brown returns.

Kyle,
Didn't know about the interview and wasn't trying to be snarky. Thanks for the info.
It's all good. I didn't actually listen to the interview. Just had heard that before, can't remember where. I haven't been on here in a few days.

Mullins doesn't seem to think Brown is close. "Week to week"
Man, I hate to say this. But if Brown & Harvey aren't coming back, we really need to consider NOT red-shirting Foster Wonders.

Until Brown returns (didn’t like the sound of Harvey’s circumstances), Southern is one injury to a guard away from being in a very difficult spot with minimal depth, especially as hard as those guys guard.
I do wonder (pun partially intended) if the consideration about redshirting Wonders might have been different if everyone knew then what they do now, but I’m not privy to all the factors or how realistic it is that Wonders could help in the short term.
If Wonders is going to have his redshirt pulled(so to speak) this would probably be the game to do it.
I imagine the jump from the UP to D1 could be tough but flip side Noah Frederking jumped from 1A basketball in southern Illinois to D1(5 ppg on 38% shooting) as a true freshman at Evansville and they seem to be pretty similar players in both size and skill set.
It's not out of the realm of possibility that his redshirting was more to do with Verplancken, Harvey, and Coupet all occupying that 3 spot than anything, though.

Not only that but there's going to be two non D-1 games coming up to get him some run. I can't imagine how pointless those games are going to be if we still have a 9 man rotation, you might see Chris Cross getting major minutes.
I'd only redshirt Wonders if I thought he was two years away. If you really think he's not going to be ready to contribute even next year, then you stick with the redshirt. If you think he can be a rotational player next year, then pull the redshirt and give him some run now.
I'm curious if Foster is 100% healthy and if that is factoring into the redshirt decision? Someone mentioned he might not have been dressed for our games in the VI.
Also, if Brown and Harvey are out for the foreseeable future, Troy D'Amico needs more minutes too. Developing that depth will only help later in the year. Comparing coaches during their time at SIU, that's something Bruce Weber got right and Chris Lowery did not.

Wonders was dressed/shooting around in warmups during the tournament. Only Brown and Harvey were not.
And I do think D’Amico will get more opportunity in the coming weeks. D’Avanzo struggled in limited action at the tournament but maybe the lesser opponents can get him going a bit.

Not sure why nobody has asked Mullins about Wonders and Ebube. He was asked about redshirts before the season and seemed like he was open to it but there haven't been specific questions about either player.
I mean Wonders redshirt makes sense as it was the most crowded position on the roster.
D'Amico didn't because his position wasn't.
Ebube is in the same situation as Wonders.
