Rich Herrin's team wasn't even on the bubble. None of us following it at the time were surprised. SIU had a very weak schedule that year. I think it was pretty well known before selection Sunday SIU wasn't getting a bid. Rich threw a fit and that is why it got so much press, along with the deceiving record.Let's hope that several teams that normally wouldn't be in the conversation for a bid (for instance, Penn State in the Big Ten) don't go on crazy upset sprees and win their conference tournaments, which would push favored teams into at-large territory and might work against Indiana State. I think that's what happened the year one of Rich Herrin's teams won 26 games and didn't receive a bid.

Well, I do remember the NCAA Tournament show that year listed SIU as one of the "final four out" after the bids were released, so it had to be somewhat close. Also ticked me off that under the MVC tournament format that season, the conference championship game was played at Illinois State, which made it to the title game, and we lost a close one. Play it on a neutral court and we're probably in. No denying, though, that our schedule wasn't too imposing, and I also remember going from somewhat confident to having very little confidence as underdogs and bubble teams won automatic bids on Saturday and Sunday and started crowding the field. And if that scenario happens again, it's not to the Sycamores' advantage.
Looks like SLU might try and poach Schertz.
Apologies if the link doesn't post right I haven't posted a tweet on here before
Edit: If anyone wants to tell me how to embed tweets it would be much appreciated

Lunardi has InSU the last one in but also has only 6 Big 10 teams in I think. I think that's unrealistic. No question in my mind that the Sycs should be in, but the committee seems to always favor the big conferences that are afraid to come and play us.
I would bet the Big 10 gets more like 7 or 8 in and the Sycs get screwed.
Villanova just beat 3-28 DePaul with a 3 with 8 seconds left. Would have gotten Villanova off the bubble for sure, probably should be off either way after that

No- That was a year earlier. That dunk off his flat-top happened at Wichita against the Harstad/Gallagher led Bluejays. That game at ISU-R was the last on-campus tourney. It switched to the Kiel Center the next year then to the old Checker Dome in '92.

@garywilsonfan why is it these big time schools go after coaches that are fair to midland. DePaul hire and fire a coach and after his replacement was fired. Hired him again?

Crazy thing is Leito had like 3 NBA players on the 2019 team at DePaul and managed to win a whole 7 conference games lol
Wasnt that 26 win Herrin team the one that beat the Big 8 champs in Chicago? Committe took Ohio State, a team that was 0-fer on the road.
but also has only 6 Big 10 teams in I think.
Considering how poorly that conference has performed in the tourney the last 2 years, I'd say 6 is being generous.
If you're gonna reply to me in the forums, please quote what I wrote that you're replying to so I have a clue...thanks! 😀

That victory happened the next season, 1990-91, when SIU defeated Oklahoma State at a tournament in Rosemont hosted by DePaul. I was visiting my mother and father in the Chicago area at the time and traveled through snow to go to the game (crowd was about 80% SIU fans).
