let's just say that maybe the bobber knows more than some, maybe less than some. I will say that thru the Mullins process, so-ill-24 was on target on every post.
to suggest that after the Mullins decision, followed by the search calamity, and then the season we suffered thru (despite that thrilling Thursday win over the sycamores) everyone would be thrilled about the state of saluki basketball is silly.
and like so-ill-24 the bobber supports Nagy and all of ours coaches.
I hate that Tim Leonard put himself in a box last year when he said he wanted a proven winner.
I think his search process went about as well as you could hope though. They had Preston Spradlin through the Illinois game and he backed out. I’ve heard that Spradlin had a discussion with Brad Underwood that might have changed his mind there and James Madison is a better job so hard to blame him. It would have been a home run hire as Spradlin wouldn’t be at SIU for long.
Don't know how close things got with Jerrod Calhoun but he ended up getting a better job too and he’s been one of the best coaches in the country this season at Utah St.
I'll preface this information with the caveat that it is NOT a shot at Nagy, whom I support. But it's undeniable that most of the head coaches who were linked to the SIU job, or at least were thought of as potential candidates, did pretty well for themselves this year. Spradlin went 20-12 at JMU, won the conference's regular-season title and is still considered a top candidate for a power conference job. Calhoun is 25-6 at Utah State and also might move on. Alan Huss knocked it out of the park at High Point and is going to the NCAA Tournament. He'll also be a hot commodity. Eric Henderson went 20-12 at South Dakota State. We're all too familiar with what McCollum accomplished at Drake. Heck, even Pat Skerry -- whose potential candidacy was greeted with condemnation from just about everyone, including me -- went 22-11 at Towson.
@siufan81 My lips on his butt? What are we, 13?
I never said competing was hard because he was recruiting HS players. I was pointing out that's what he wanted to do, and is exactly what Nagy says he wants to do. In the college basketball landscape, where loyalty is out the window and players are now bought, the portal has to be the #1 way to get players and getting HS players will be #2. Nagy has said publicly 10+ times, "I want HS players and I don't believe in NIL." How hard is it for an old guy to change what he's done the last 25+ years in coaching?
I said Bryan was at a disadvantage because established coaches, who the SIU administration pointed out Bryan couldn't beat (DeVries, Wardle, Jacobson), had 4-5-year players. Please go and look at Drake's roster and know that they had guys play 5 and 6 years of college basketball. Several played more than 160 games in their career. Why? Because of Covid. Having 23 and 24-year-olds play against 18-20-year-olds is a huge advantage. An example is why our early 2000's teams were good. Bruce, Painter, and Lowery redshirted freshmen and always have those 4th and 5th-year guys leading our teams.
I could name 5 to 7 things Bryan did that didn't help his cause to retain his job. I can point out 10 things that he did well. I understand the game and business better than most, and as some have pointed out, I probably have more inside knowledge of SIU basketball than anyone here.
Without question, Benson and Enright were coming to SIU. Benson's family was going around Mt. Vernon in the middle of his season, saying he couldn't wait to come back home and play for SIU and coach Mullins. All Wright was 100% coming to SIU. As someone pointed out, the family told them in StL the same thing.
I'm over Bryan being the HC. It's a business, I get it. My frustration is simply with the Administration, specifically the Chancellor and Kupec. It was these two who made the decision. They wanted a different brand of basketball, a proven coach, etc. They were cocky, saying they had their guy(s).
Well, they struck out 3 times on their coach. They settled for a guy who has coached for a long time and won many games. But he is a coach who doesn't like the portal, doesn't like NIL, and has had declining success in a lower league. Bryan's teams were better than Nagy's every year during his tenure. These aren't my opinions; they are facts. We paid $100k more to get a guy with 25+ years of experience but a guy who doesn't like the new era of college basketball and had the same number of wins as our HC over the last two years.
Everyone on here should ask themselves, if Nagy was so good and has so many wins, how did he never get above the Horizon League?
I want Nagy to win. I automatically support him because I will ALWAYS support the SIU basketball team.
You're like a broken record. Name me a mid major coach who likes the nil and the portal. I don't know of any. Some major college coaches retired early because they hated it. You keep bringing this up as if it means something ... doesn't mean a damn thing, and you really should quit acting like you're the only one that knows something about basketball ... you sure as hell aren't.
You also keep stating that your speculation is 100% fact. It isn't because Benson could change his mind at any point. He went to Missouri State for two years instead of come here. I guarantee that the largest Catholic University in America offered him more money than SIU is going to give him. Whether they were interested pre-Mullins I have no idea and neither do you. You don't even know why he went to DePaul. It may not have been because of Brian Mullins ... maybe he wanted to play in the big city. It's a little more exciting than Carbondale
Contrary to popular belief, there were a lot of people including me and others on this website who did not like what they were seeing under Brian Mullins. I think we all like Mullins being a great saluki alum but the program was mediocre after 5 years.
Since a lot of people are playing what if on here, what if XJ got injured and was out for the season after game 3 last year. How many wins?
Fact is a lot of people on here don't like Nagy and take every opportunity to say something negative about him, whereas they gave Brian a ton of rope ... because he made a lot of freshman coaching mistakes in ball games and played really boring offense. I usually didn't hear too many complaints after those boo boos.
The revisionists don't like Nagy's demeanor, they don't like the fact that he's older, and they probably don't even like what he says after the game.
When I hear a bunch of negative comments about Nagy and then "I support the coach", I call bullshit!

if we are playing what if’s. What if you only post 3200 times instead of 6400?
@sandman95 If you never post another stupid remark, I'll cut back. That's a promise!
@ajcsaluki you listed some fantastic coaches who are going to be hot commodities in the future, if not already. Yours truly would be elated if SIU Basketball were to have that type of season in year 1 or 2. I would also be saddened when that said coach would leave for a larger school, and the promised land. Certainly that is the risk that an AD takes when hiring a young, inspiring coach that has done well. He is most likely gone in 1 or 2 years. Coach Weber was only here 5 years, Painter 1 as HC. It can be a double edged sword!

Are you seriously calling someone a broken record? Hello pot, meet the kettle. You have been spewing your same bullet points over and over for some time now. I’m sure you were one of the blue hairs in the audience of the original press conference, who popped a woody when Naggie ( might as well spell his name wrong since we can’t spell Bryan correctly) said he was going to play at this super fast pace.
@ajcsaluki you listed some fantastic coaches who are going to be hot commodities in the future, if not already. When we fire a coach, we pay them a buyout. When a coach leaves us for a better job, they pay us a buyout and we get richer. Drake has that going for them and that money can be poured into the team somehow. I’d take that even though it sucks to lose a good coach.
The amounts of money being thrown at the players will exponentially escalate. Anyone who thinks your average mid-major school can survive in the jungle is delusional.
The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.

It’s just something every higher level mid major will have to adjust to. We need to start poaching lower level mid major all conference players. Part of the sport now….unfortunately.
@johnny-utah I would say we sort of did that this year in that some of the players coming in were from lower mid-majors. I agree with the premise and possibly looking at high D2 may also be an option. It seemed to work for Drake. It will also be interesting to see who gets another year of eligibility as a former JUCO player.

My 22 posts on this website for sure equal a broken record. You're right.
I tell you what, if you want people to take you seriously, please be smart enough to know our HoF Point Guard and ex-coach's name is Bryan Mullins and not Brian.
The check amount that I write SIU Basketball every year was the same for the 2024-2025 season as it was for the 2023-2024 season. Does that mean that despite the horrible job the administration did last year, I still support the program the same?
The amounts of money being thrown at the players will exponentially escalate. Anyone who thinks your average mid-major school can survive in the jungle is delusional.
You're right. But Colleges are only going to throw ridiculous amounts of money at proven guys playing college ball OR the ELITE HS guys (top 100).
Solid Mid-Majors will become the Minor leagues to the Power 4 schools. They should be able to get better HS players than in years past. Good mid-major coaches who can develop talent can benefit greatly. Look at Valpo's coach and the interview he just did. He praised Schweiger and the work he and his staff did to develop him. He is "happy" that he is transferring and finding an opportunity to capitalize on his success. As much as they would like him to stay, he will use it to show HS recruits that he can do this for them, too.
The mid-major coach can complain about the system, or they can adapt. One issue I have with an older coach. It will be hard for them to adapt to the new system, which is why so many great coaches are retiring.
I’m too lazy to go back over previous posts. Has Murray’s new coach been announced/discussed on here?
