C J Stroud QB for Ohio state was just given a 200k Mercedes for an NIL no telling what else he will get
@jabman62 I believe Mosley from MSU received 250K after he transfered to Mizzou.
That is true but this type of dealing will make it hard for teams like Southern to compete as Southern has no means to make these type of deals so I am afraid college athletics is going to go down in flames
The NIL will ruin college athletics as we know it. However it will also create tiers within the BIG MONEY conferences which will ultimately cause another shift in college athletics. I hope SIU has enough funding to compete at high level, but that's likely competing at a high level against other schools that fall within the mid-major category....however the NCAA wants to classify that tier. The BIG MONEY schools can go play with themselves.....they'll cause their own demise.

Wow. Those are some eye-popping numbers for sure. Hard to imagine any college aged kids in these scenarios not chasing the dough. I hope more programs outside the power poop conferences can find creative ways to compete, or things become regulated more fairly for schools and student-athletes, otherwise I have to agree that this will destroy college hoops (the best thing the sports world has going, IMO) and college sports as a whole.

....and so it begins.....legally.

Don't exaggerate! It's only a lease.....and it's a Bentley, not a Mercedes!! LOL Olave drove a BMW x7, which I much prefer!
Ohio State is huge - it requires a fine auto to get around campus and to class. Wonder if he has reserved parking spots.
Stroud projected to be the #1 draft pick.
Stroud's deal comes a week after Ohio State coach Ryan Day told Columbus-based donors that he believed it would take $13 million in NIL contracts to keep the Buckeyes' roster together.
"One phone call and they're out the door," Day said. "We cannot let that happen at Ohio State. I'm not trying to sound the alarm, I'm just trying to be transparent about what we're dealing with."
The Buckeyes announced following a June 2 panel that more than 900 NIL contracts have been signed involving all 36 Ohio State sports. The university has tracked endorsement deals totaling more than $3.5 million, which it claims ranks No. 1 among all universities.
No doubt the impact of NIL/financial incentives on recruiting for schools like SIU is a legit concern. While it's obvious Southern isn't going to have the resources to go toe-to-toe in NIL $ (or whatever it evolves into) against schools from the huge-money conferences, maybe the more pressing question is will SIU be able to stack up against programs like Bradley ( https://businessofcollegesports.com/name-image-likeness/home-of-the-brave-nil-collective-for-bradley-mens-basketball-launches/), Saint Louis, Murray State, etc. ... the kind of programs you probably have to beat for recruits here and there to be an MVC contender/NCAA tournament-caliber program in basketball.
I've got to think some of those conversations have been taking place among the basketball and football coaching staffs and around the athletic department.
Yeah I also saw that on Instagram. Lance is quite a player, hopefully he will have his shooting touch back this year with some backup from an improved bench.

PS- Cade Hornecker put it on Instagram too.

This opens the door to all kinds of potentially innovative marketing and fundraising ideas. I wonder if some schools would go as far as to consider budget cuts in other areas to help bolster their coffers for the wild, wild west of the NIL age in college athletics.
However SIU decides to proceed, they'll have to be fast and decisive, or they'll quickly be left in the dust.

But just in case this whole NIL landscape doesn't turn out well for Southern in the coming years, let's go ahead and win the Valley this year to be safe. 😀

Yes indeed! An outright MVC championship would do nicely. And since we're asking, I'd like a spot in the Final Four as well! No pressure, Salukis, but "go big or go home" is a mantra I try and live by. 😜
