Looks like Monaghan might be the top assistant at Green Bay but the program is a step down for sure. Curious how that played out. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Banks end up there; hopefully not Wonders.
Count me among those who think the staff is (over)due for a new voice who can provide help for retooling the offense. My only concern is this is an important few weeks of recruiting with several scholarships open and it would be nice to be at full strength.
Â
I think change was needed on the staff but it sucks its coming in such a big offseason for the program.  I hope there’s a quick plan to replace Monaghan with someone on that can teach offense. Â
On the other side of the coin, sometimes new assistants bring new recruiting connections or even strong ties to specific players. Also a couple internal candidates potentially in Fritz and Wills but seems like a new voice would be called for here. We’ll see.
Some of Bryan’s former players at Loyola might be of interest to at least add to the staff.  Clayton Custer is director of player development at Oklahoma.
SIU brought in Monaghan which led to Domask, could find a connection there too and maybe get a player you wouldn’t have otherwise.
Is Green Bay's new head coach really named Sundance?
SIU needs a veteran assistant coach that has recruiting ties and knows how to run different offensive sets based on the situation. Â Anything short of that and I'm not sure Coach Mullins has identified that deficiency.
Having your recruiting coordinator take another job right in the middle of a critical recruiting period is unfortunate, but does give him an opportunity to bring in a new voice.
I’m sure he had a list of candidates and needs to get this hole filled soon. A veteran coach with some offensive prowess and recruiting ties would be great, but they are expensive and his budget is limited.
My guess would be Mamon becomes the primary recruiter now, hopefully he'll start to pull in some more big time recruits.
Also, it appears from what some folks are saying on here (who have connections with "the administration" which I have to believe is the AD or someone close to him), the coaching staff is on the hot seat. Why wouldn't PM want to take a new job with a coach who just got hired...resets the clock anyway and it does look like he's the lead assistant.
I have to believe if folks on here are talking about it the coaches are well aware of the situation...doesn't make for an easy hire for a new assistant and damn sure doesn't make it easy for recruiting. Mullins and company certainly have their work cut out for them.

I don’t know why Mullins wouldn’t get at least as much time as Hinson did and don’t know how serious these supposed concerns are but, for the sake of argument, if administrative expectations are high for Mullins to get to the NCAA/NIT in the next year or two, they better resource the program accordingly. That includes digging a little deeper for this assistant opening, upping the recruiting budget as needed, leaning into this new NIL program, etc.
You can’t demand big-time results but make a middling financial commitment. None of this is to say Mullins can’t improve aspects of the program without more money, but I would like to see him get a very fair shake based on some of the strong intangibles he brings to the program.

All due respect , but what are these “strong intangibles” that Bryan Mullins brings to SIU? Â
I assume you are talking about something other than the absolute bare minimum of players attending class and not getting in trouble??Â

They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.
Has there been any talk of bringing in Tyler Smithpeters as an assistant? Just asking.Â
I agree Bryan should get a couple more years. Our current situation should not be a surprise to anyone. You bring in such a young man and it's his first head coaching job. Failures should be expected. And Bryan does have a lot of positives. The players he brings in do represent the university well. But maybe Bryan could put a little bail money in his budget. Would it kill him to bring in one or two good players with questionable character flaws. Didn't Kyle Smithpeters have a bit of a dust up with a coed and he came out the other side. Just asking.Â
Presently, Bryan does have a huge 'BUST' sign hanging over him.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
This is probably the best culture for players in respect to academics, community involvement and being good citizens we have ever had in the basketball program. The intangibles are obvious. We have the highest accumulative GPA we have ever had. The players are constantly doing community and civic reach out. There is no hint of impropriety from players and they always say the right things in interviews. The players have undeniably been a tight nit group that spends almost all their time together. You can't even begin to question what a great culture Mullins has brought. Also, it appears from what some folks are saying on here (who have connections with "the administration" which I have to believe is the AD or someone close to him), the coaching staff is on the hot seat. What he hasn't brought is a post season berth. We need to get a lot better on the court, but I can't imagine a better program off the court. Just compare it to Hinson or Lowery's late tenure culture and compare the student athlete player citizens. There is absolutely no comparison. However, like I said we need to get better competitively and get over the hump.
I do believe the good Mullins has brought regarding culture and academics should get him some additional rope.

Tyler Smithpeters won a JUCO title with his brother's recruits in his first year as a head coach...pretty cool feat, especially given his brother wasn't able to win a game in Hutch, but let's pump the brakes a bit. He's not shown any history in terms of maintaining top level recruiting and winning as a head coach. If he's able to sustain the winning culture for another 2-3 years, maybe he gets an assistant job somewhere, but no way do I see BM hiring him now. Remember how long it took his brother to get a job at the next level as an assistant?
Â
- If memory serves Kyle started at juco was an assistant at Mo St under Lusk and took over at Logan to move back and be closer to family but I could be wrong
Regarding Asst. Coach, Does B. Mullins have another brother?
