To think that when the preseason MVC poll came out and picked SIU for sixth, I commented (along with a few others) that it seemed a bit low. The way things are now, I'm not sure SIU could beat out the likes of Augustana and Carthage for sixth in the CCIW.

I can't believe Hensley was once a 4 star recruit that played at Cincy.  It's like nobody has coached him for 4 years.

In fairness he didn't play much at Cincinnati. No starts and 7 min/g in mostly garbage time over 2 seasons.

Obviously, a disappointing season so far.  Losing Elliott for the year just completely took the wind out of our sails.  We are a bad team right now.  I still appreciate the candor from Coach Nagy after the loss and hope they can salvage something positive eventually.

As I said last game, we're a bad team that does nothing well.  We're bad across the board.  Can't shoot 2's, can't shoot 3's, can't shoot free throws, turn the ball over way too much, can't defend 3's, can't get turnovers on the defensive end

Nagy has serious issues coaching defense. Turns out he’s the savior Leonard thought he got when he accidentally stumbled upon him in his horrible search. Team has no heart, no toughness. Just as soft as can be. They’ll fold. The Bryan Mullins era made you proud to support guys who played that hard. This is pathetic.

I thought we were going to be playing more of a run and gun style of basketball as opposed to Mullins methodical slow ball. Maybe in the future?

I kind of expected us to get smacked in this one…I didn’t expect us to look this bad doing it. Our guys outside of Davis, look like they have zero confidence. No one on the team is a threat from outside right now (not sure during the recruiting process how they never saw that). The offense looks in shambles and it is so easy to defend us b/c we can’t hit 3’s even at a mediocre clip. Defense has been bad. I don’t know how many times I watched our guys close out on a shooter without their hands up…when they are shooting 60% from deep you might want to have a hand or two up.

Seems like Nagy runs more of a gap/pack line defense, but it feels like most of our guys aren’t putting much pressure on the ball. That style is susceptible to giving up threes but is supposed to prevent guys from being able to penetrate off the dribble, especially in the lane, but we are giving up both! Not a good recipe for winning.

I’m all for giving this staff a shot, but if this continues, we are going to be right back in the same position next year with building a new roster b/c a lot of these guys are leaving (not the ones you want to leave).

The fact that SIU keeps outrebounding teams (including some pretty good ones) but is 1-6 against D1 opponents, losing some of them in lopsided fashion, is plain weird.

Just shows how many other things the team is doing poorly.

We play a little faster, score a little more.  That is exciting! we also give up a bucket every possession, but hey, at least it's a little faster!

While I understand the frustration, I am not ready to give up on the season the first week of December.

The teams we have lost to have a combined record of 37-10 (Bradley 8-1, Florida 8-0, E. Kentucky 4-4, Louisiana Tech 7-1, Oklahoma St. 4-2, Charleston 6-2). Some credit has to be given to our opponents for our record. Some on this board have wanted a tougher schedule and we definitely have that this year.

There are some issues that need to be fixed. Motion offense requires ball and player movement. We still stand too much. Drives in this offense should result in a shot at the basket, a pull-up 8-10 footer,  a kick to an open shooter, or a dump off to a post player. Sometimes we get too deep without getting any of the previously mentioned options. Our post people do not move to a position where they can receive a dump-off pass. The same can be said about the perimeter people who are not in position to receive a kick-out. This scenario has led to many of our turnovers.

Shooting has not been good at any level: threes, bunnies, free throws. This is definitely concerning and continuous work needs to be done. if you watched Bradley shoot during warm-ups, it was very, very apparent what kind of shooters they were. Their shots were not only going in, but most were nothing but net.

Defensively our communication is lacking. Sometimes we switch on screens and sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we show and recover and sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we double the ball handler and sometimes we don’t. I know scouting and planning will often dictate how you play this, often dependent on who the ball handler is and who the screener is. I do think sometimes when we switch screens we could switch back or trade who we is being guarded if we communicated more.

Southern Indiana is 4-4 having won three straight. Austin Peay is also 4-4 but have lost their last two games. High Point is 8-2. It is not going to get easier, but these are all winnable games. I’ll be there Saturday and when High Point comes to town

GO DAWGS.

I mean the season is clearly over.  Even with a few tweaks I don’t think this is a top 6 team in the conference.  This team was put together on short notice trying to fast-track a better season but they’re just not good enough.  You can tell the talented players are coming from losing programs and it’s rubbing off on them still.

I’m not out on Nagy though, I think once he gets his own players in here they’ll start to be competitive again, the question is will they be competitive enough?  There are no 4 year rebuilds anymore.

Outrageous that Nagy talked up this team’s defense all offseason and more often than not they get absolutely torched. WTF?

Nagy must have thought the defense was good because the offense is so bad. 🤣

Seriously, other than rebounding, this team needs a complete overhaul on the fundamentals as noted in many posts above. Reminds me of 7th and 8th grade basketball. God help us.

Go Dawgs!

March on triumphantly!

These are his own players.  He had the entire portal season.  This is college basketball now and Nagy has been an atrocious coach in the portal era.  Maybe this is why TL didn't initially think of him as a candidate until he failed to get the other 5 he was actually after.
