Apples to oranges but the women's coach had a similar resume from the same school how is that working out just saying

She had to go through a full rebuild because Stein's last team had all Seniors.  There's a reason Stein retired after that year.

but every one says quick turnarounds are easy with the portal

so did Bryan and the covid crap

Here's my take.  You either have to give Mullins an extension (I prefer a short one you can get out of as soon as next year if things go poorly) or you fire him.  You can't bring back Mullins on the last year of his contract and ask him to win, it's not gonna happen.

So if I'm Tim Leonard and Chancellor Lane, I'm asking if next year's team can be good enough to compete for a Valley championship and if the answer is no, you move on and fire him.  This program cannot afford to go another 7 years like Hinson without competing for a Valley championship.

I'm cool either way.  Mullins hasn't done enough for me to completely justify an extension.  He wasted 4 years of Lance Jones and Marcus Domask and couldn't build a team even close enough to win a Valley championship.  If Leonard and Lane see an upgrade out there, then I'm all for taking a swing at it.  I'm also cool with a short extension and giving Mullins one last shot if they deem he's able to get this program over the hump.

You're comparing Women's to Men's.  There's much less movement in the women's game than the men's.  I don't really follow the women's program much though so I can't speak to the job she's doing but I know she had a tough job out of the gate.  And she's only in year 2.

Out of the established coaches, I'd say he's 2nd to Yaklich. Too soon to tell on Pedon, Powell Jr., and Ragland. Prohm, Ford, and Alexander have hit higher highs than Mullins in their careers. And obviously Wardle, Jacobson, DeVries, and Schertz are all better.

And yes, if they deem that Mullins can put together a team that can compete for a Valley championship next year, then I'm all for a short extension.

You don’t have to beat around the bush here. It’s a safe space to say you don’t want Mullins as coach next year.

I’m on the record as saying Mullins should get a two year extension that could be bought out as soon as March 2025. I still think it is too soon to make a move.

Bryan has earned the benefit of the doubt in a way the former guy didn’t. Mainly the way he carries himself off the court.

If a move is made, I can only hope and pray Lane and Leonard know what they are doing.

As I said, the only option I wouldn't do is bring him back without an extension.

This year's team is gonna lose a top 3 player in the conference in X and is gonna need to hit homers in the portal to compete for a championship next year.  Last year's portal class might end up being one of the worst in the country this year based on what they got out of Hensley, Miller, McGee, and Stulic and given they had to replace two guys that transferred to the Big Ten to be starters (one of which might be an All-Big Ten first/second team) which makes me lean new coach because I don't have the confidence they can successfully navigate the portal.

I probably won’t be renewing my season tickets if this is the route we’re going. I get the argument either way, but I don’t like this. If we eventually have a winner, I’ll be back, but I don’t like an optional “rebuild” when numbers have trended up (attendance, NET ranking, etc…). This sucks. I hope Mullins does well wherever he goes and proves a point.

@salukifan32 id imagine firing a home town legend and siu hall of famer they would want to interview and find the right guy. Hopefully nothing too quick

I'd say if this is really the move they're making, they already have their guy lined up.

This is all very interesting and to me, disappointing. I am supportive of the Dawgs in all sports. I also feel Bryan Mullins should have been extended two years last month.

There have been some setbacks in this program that are not the fault of the coach, particularly two injuries. Those were the injuries to Aaron Cook and Marcus Domask. Both injuries curtailed what had started as great seasons turning them into OK at best seasons. If those seasons had played out to be as successful as they started, recruiting, attendance, and interest in the program would have been positively affected.

I also do not think it is fair to keep talking about what Domask and Jones have done this year. Domask has been praised extensively this year for doing what people were criticizing him for last year, playing bully ball. People complained about him backing people down and dribbling way too much. The shot Jones hit tonight in the waning moments of the game would have had the fans going crazy last year, like they often did. Both of these players are different players this year largely in part due to the quality of players they are playing with. I do not mean that to be a knock on their teammates last year, but we did not have Zach Edey, Braden Smith, Coleman Hawkins, or Terrence Shannon on the Banterra floor.

it will be an interesting spring for SIU basketball no matter who the coach is. Will we be able to retain the players we want? Will we add the players we need? Hopefully by June we will have the answers and then some can start complaining anew.

she is a whole other story.  That is a problem

She's in her 2nd year - don't think that's a fair comparison. She might have the POY in Randle. Give her a couple of years.

You're way off here Dude - she's in her 2nd year and was left with nothing.
