so did Bryan and the covid crapbut every one says quick turnarounds are easy with the portalApples to oranges but the women's coach had a similar resume from the same school how is that working out just saying
She had to go through a full rebuild because Stein's last team had all Seniors. There's a reason Stein retired after that year.
Bryan was left with a freshman 1st team all-state guard now starting for the #2 team in the country.
The excuses are so irritating. Injuries, COVID, etc. This is Bryan's 5th year with a team of guys he's recruited and it was good enough for 6th place, which seemed like an accomplishment because they were picked 9th.
When you coach the way Mullins does, you're gonna have injuries every single year. He has his team playing hard every single game which is one of the positives for him over 5 years. But trying hard only gets you so far because when they play the good teams in the Valley, there's a noticeable talent and coaching gap every single time.
After thinking about this, if this happens, I'll feel bad for Bryan..just like I felt bad for Lowry.
But I do feel he has NOT really gotten the job done in 5 years. To hire a young coach that has never been a HC and expect him to "git er done" in a tough league like the MVC is expecting too much I think. He'll do fine eventually and may someday be a very good coach. He's not there yet.
Thinking cold-bloodedly, like a CEO or university Chancellor, this may be a good-for-SIU decision. We kept Hinson and Lennon way too long I think. Heck, we kept Joe Gottfried until he went 0 - 16 in the MVC.
I sure as hell won't quit giving money to my favorite Alma Mater. If I was that tender, I would have shut them off years ago for some of the stuff the meter maids have pulled and for hiring Brad Colville to kill our enrollment while obsequiously groveling before the traitorous Randy Dunn!
Go Dawgs!
the shot caller knows who he wants.
Who's the shot caller in this case? Mahoney, Lane, or Leonard?
If you go back and listen to the postgame interview after the Northern Iowa loss, he sounded like a defeated man.
It was different than usual, IMO.
But BM did say, once again, that this team is a championship caliber team, which is embarrassing and not even close to true.
The people defending the current HC on here sure don’t have very many, if ANY, legit reasons to keep him.
It’s all he’s such a nice man and Hinson got 7 years. Nothing would change with 2 more seasons of a coach who very clearly is not cut out to be a Head Coach.
Bryan will make mid six figure salaries for the next 25 years as a Power 5 top assistant.
Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.
They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.
Hire a first time HC. Has the program trending up, so fire him and go get another first time HC to rebuild. I’m as loyal as they come but this might be it for me. Our admin will 100% screw this up. Women’s coach IS a disaster. Can’t wait to finish 12th next year and watch Mullins have huge success elsewhere. That’s gonna be fun.
My fear here is that those in charge are going to screw this up. Many players exiting quickly after this is announced and they sit on their hands while good recruits sign elsewhere.
i also really hate to see guys like Davis, Ferguson, Ebube, Hornecker, etc go elsewhere. I think their best days are to come and hopefully in a Saluki uniform.
Going to be interesting as this thing could blow up to a total rebuild fast if not handled correctly. SIU has screwed up so many things in the past my trust level that they will make the right move isn’t very high. I hope to be proven wrong.
anytime you fire a coach in today's current situation it will be a total rebuild players will transfer for a better opportunity it is just the way things are todayso did Bryan and the covid crapbut every one says quick turnarounds are easy with the portalApples to oranges but the women's coach had a similar resume from the same school how is that working out just saying

I mean, you are entitled to your opinion of wanting a new coach and thinking Mullins won’t work out but this statement is simply not true. There have been various reasons why he deserves an extension outlined in this thread.
Just because you capitalize all the letters in the word ‘any’ doesn’t make you more correct.
For those (only one) who keep saying the program is trending up, how does finishing 6th with absolutely no chance of post season play for the 5th season equate to trending up? If this program were a stock, this is not one I would purchase. The team finished worse than last season and have absolutely ZERO recruits for the upcoming season.
That being said, letting him go could very well be the end of the program as we know it.....although I PERSONALLY believe the end of the program happened when a couple players decided they didn't want to be here, which is why I can't wrap my head around the fact that their accomplishments are not only followed, but lauded on this site. I digress................
My final thought is this, despite my higher expectations, I do not want Mullins to be forced out, because again I believe that could drop our program to new depths, if that's even possible.
Mullins will do well in the future, although I believe it will be as an assistant coach, or a step down in competition. That's just a pure guess though.

How are we trending up? Lol literally finished worse this year than last. That's not trending up. Our previous coach's last season we finished 3rd in the conference btw

Yep, I haven't watched any of our former players dribble a ball all year (Well, I guess except Banks, right?). I've been in the "Former Player Tracking Thread" maybe four times all season and no matter how drunk I am, I still think ""I'd rather be banging my ** with a hammer right now."
I have relatives who are fair-weather Illini fans (more so just high school and college basketball in general fans) who come over for Saturday morning coffee and every time they bring up that shit, my mind goes, "Nope, you gotta go. Coffee's over. Out!"
It's like keeping tabs on your ex's sexcapades with her new rich, handsome boyfriend on their Malibu beach vacations. The *** outta here with that.
Bryan has had a lot to navigate as a very young very inexperienced coach. I believe we will regret it when he leaves. Regardless of what the negative posters say, we have a good core of talented players for next season. We will have all our big men and AJ & KD will only get better. I believe KD will be player of the year before he graduates if he decides to stay. I believe Sharpe will be a good point guard for us. We just need to add some GOOD depth to what we already have. Bryan needs to quit being stubborn and make some adjustments/changes also.

It will be one of the biggest mistakes SIU has ever made... 10 years from now Bryan Mullins is going to be a star.

He could be the next Porter Moser but Moser isn’t what he is today without getting fired by Illinois State and learning under Rick Majerus at Saint Louis. Can Mullins learn on the job still at SIU and figure things out or does he need a lead assistant role at a bigger place than Loyola? SIU hasn’t been to a postseason tournament in 16 years so they just can’t afford to continue to wait and hope that he does figure it out on the job.
