the shot caller knows who he wants.
But who calls the shots at SIU these days? The Chancellor, who almost has one foot out the door? The Athletic Director? The Board of Trustees?

solid question
The fact that you have to ask that question on an athletic specific topic speaks to the dysfunction at the leadership level.
I’m not so naive to think that bosses don’t have input, but in my experience and in my profession, the best bosses allow the people they hired and empowered to make the decisions at their level. The ones that have to have their fingerprints on everything were the worst to work for and had the most dysfunctional teams.
I'm sure the A.D. makes these decisions, but the ultimate boss is the Chancellor, not to say the decision can't come from top down. Seems to me that Lane is definitely the boss at SIU and has a strong vision for what he wants.
Remember Lane fired the previous AD with no reason given and had to pay her a buyout. Doubt Mahony has any say in it, although might be involved in the money side of things.
NMSU has not yet chosen a president evidently, and Lane says they asked him to apply, so saying he has one foot out the door is probably not accurate IMO.
Mr woogers
applying for other jobs is the definition of foot out the door. I don’t care if he was asked or not.
just sayin 😊
Allen VanWinkle was hired by Bruce Swinburne. He was the VP over athletics at the time and he then tried to keep him when he was under fire. Van Winkle misrepresented that he had an offer from a FLA D 1 school and was trying to leverage SIU. It wasn't true. In the end Stafford Stephenson took the fall for Van Winkle. There were other casualties in that mess including Lew Hatrzog and George Iubelt, through no fault of their own. Ultimately Van Winkle lost his job.
Quite sure one of the reasons Van Winkle was hired was that he was the coach of a nationally ranked JC team in Michigan with lots of talent. The idea was that the talent would come with him.... similar to Nolan Richardson who came to Tulsa from a JC National Championship team and immediately won the NIT.
Ah, yes, it's all coming back to me now. One of the guys on Van Winkle's juco team was Kevin Willis, the 7-footer who had a long, successful NBA career. Van Winkle really played up Willis when he took the job. Willis would have been a game-changer at SIU, but he went to Michigan State instead. I doubt we ever really had a chance to sign him.
That whole athletic hierarchy was a mess back then. I graduated in '81 and never really heard much about how Hartzog did as AD, but it certainly was a job he probably didn't especially want or need in the twilight of his great career. It often seemed that there were only three competent people in prominent positions -- Rey Dempsey, Itchy Jones and Fred Huff (and in fairness there were several excellent coaches in non-revenue sports who saw their programs eroded by budget cuts).
By the way, a few years ago I found out a bit about what became of Van Winkle after he left SIU. It doesn't appear that he ever coached basketball again -- on any level. He moved to northeast Florida, worked for several country clubs and taught at a few golf schools. Then he became a glorified golf pro at a luxury resort near Jacksonville and retired from that gig seven or eight years ago.
Cosign.I just want to be on record... If the current chancellor makes this decision on if Mullins will be fired and the replacement 2 things will be true.
1) Bryan Mullins will be a great head coach for somebody in the near future.
2) This hire will be an unmitigated disaster and the man who made it will be running for greener pastures soon anyway.

”Bertrand is a lock for SIU”. I have a long memory.I’m not going to question Barkeep, he has a proven track record.

SIU admin and the board are very happy with Lane to date. Enrollment has increased, giving has increased, very little drama, etc. The NMSU job which he was invited to apply for includes an over $100k pay increase. He has been committed to SIU while here. Lots of folks jumping to big conclusions with little info.the shot caller knows who he wants.

While I’m on the side of retaining Mullins, some of the comments on here are acting like Lane is the worst combination of Rita Cheng and Randy Dunn. The fact is enrollment and endowments have increased steadily since he got here and he seems to have respect from students and faculty. Giving is up overall. Just because we don’t agree with one decision doesn’t mean we throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak. If Lane wasn’t doing well then NMSU would not have put him in their search process. There's obviously more to SIU than one program. Then again we had a bunch of people look over missteps of Jerry Kill because of football success. At the end of the day SIU is the sum of its various parts and intercollegiate athletics is one component of that. I get some feelings could potentially be upset but let’s not let that cloud the overall upward trajectory SIU is on.

I have no inside info or anything but this was stated
“Pretty sure there will be a short extension. This is what I’m hearing anyway.”
Then 9 hours later it was stated there was an heir apparent in place. So I’m not taking this as the gospel.
However this has been a gut punch to hear the rumors. I have honestly been teetering which way to go. But having it thrown out there…that he is being fired…with a replacement lined up. I don’t like it. I am more positive on the roster next year than others. IF we get a portal point guard I feel we’ll be really good.
As a consensus the board loves:
SG: Ferguson
SF: Davis
C: Ebube
Then you have:
Damico- Scored double digits in last 6 games.
Hensley
Cade
Rupert
So I dunno…..

That's assuming all those guys come back, which can't be taken for granted in this era.
But if true, this rumor of the chancellor unilaterally making this call and hiring a connection from A&M (which has not been trending well, BTW) seems sketchy and doesn't feel great.
All the more reason to pull for a surprising run this weekend.
