I want to see Mullins succeed but I’ve got to see some serious growth as a head coach.  The offense has been pretty pore in his tenure and when a seasoned team hasn’t demonstrated fundamental skills like boxing out and rebounding it gives me serious concern about his ability to make adjustments, both in practice and more importantly in game situations.  He has to commit to doing what it takes to improve.  He’s had really good players the past few years (Domask, Jones, and Johnson were on the same team last year….), including this year.  I need to see improvement.  Go Dawgs!

Mullins is getting mentioned for the now-open DePaul job!

who would want to go to that dumpster fire when was the last time they were relevant

I think DePaul is still a good job.  The Big East is a great conference.  DePaul has been really lazy with their past few coaching hires.  I think a guy like Josh Schertz would be a great hire for them.

Schertz will likely have better options than DePaul after this year, if not soon after. If I were him I’d wait for the right spot and just keep winning at ISU Blue until then.

Mullins…I have to think will be a bit far down their list, so not sure if they will get to him, but he obviously has Chicago ties. It might be easier for him to recruit Ill Wolves players getting them to stay home vs coming down to C-Dale. Big East Basketball would be hard to pass up, despite DePaul being a perennial doormat in that league.

Not so sure about that. Depaul is a commuter school that does not play ball on campus - they play at McCormick Place, a far piece from the main campus on the north side. Not a place with much school spirit. Even being in a great basketball conference with national champions and a metro area of 9 million, attendance rarely makes it to 5000 - usually more like 3000.

In the Ray Meyer era, they played on campus and filled that gym. Schertz is nuts if he takes that job - be a bump in a pay but a tough place to make it considering the circumstances.

Younger basketball fans find it hard to believe when I tell them that DePaul usually went something like 27-3 every year and dominated the Chicago sports media in the late '70s and early '80s with Ray Meyer, Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, etc. At that time, the Cubs, Sox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks all were mediocre or worse, and Chicago fans were hungry for any kind of winner.

The program still has decent potential with its Big East membership and  Chicago location, but the off-campus arena and 30 years of losing are issues. It's also a coaching graveyard -- last guy who had any sort of substantial success there was Joey Meyer, who recently passed away. If I'm Schertz -- or BM for that matter -- I'd be inclined to pass on this one.

Yeah, unless Schertz is all about Italian beef and hot dogs, I would advise against him taking DePaul. Just a very difficult spot to win these days ... not impossible, but difficult. And I think he can keep it rolling at Indiana State and will have opportunities elsewhere (maybe even this offseason) with a better shot to succeed. If Bradley finishes the year well, and especially if they win in St. Louis, I could see Wardle making some sense there.

You guys can't keep pointing out offense as an area that hasn't shown tremendous growth and expect anyone to take your point serious....

It's true that SIU has looked better offensively for much of this season, largely thanks to Johnson's outstanding season. It's also true that the offense has slumped during this three-game skid - actually for six of the last seven halves as the second half at Valpo was also bad. And it's not just been about missing good shots. There has been a lot of sluggishness, sloppiness and poor possessions.

Let's see if they can regroup, make some adjustments and get the offense going again.

I might point out that Johnson sat for much of the second half of the Valpo game

What are the expectations of Mullins and SIU basketball? Is a middle of the pack Valley finish okay with most people? He has had 5 years to fix it. Unlike some people on here I don’t expect next year his 6th year to be better after all he will be losing his starting guards. I personally expect more but apparently I am being unreasonable. It just pains me to see Drake, Indiana State and Bradley three teams we use to own move way up the Valley hierarchy. I guess I should come to the realization that SIU basketball is medicore at best and accept it.

@mdogs1

According to Saluki 4 Life and the rest of the Koolaid crowd, yes.  Being picked 9th and finishing 5th or 6th is a great accomplishment and we are being selfish and unreasonable to expect more from Saluki Basketball. 🙄
