Doesn't work that way any more with the portal and hundred and hundreds of players entering it. I think most players are recruited to a school or program rather than the coach. Not all certainly. Many coaches rebuild in one year if they can grab serious talent from the portal. Throwing away a couple of years of salary on a coach who hasn't gotten it done is a waste.
Not saying BM should get the axe, but he's had years to recruit and we ARE getting out-recruited by InSU, Bradley, Drake, Mo. State, etc. And don't be surprised if Prom and Belmont pull in some serious talent this Spring.
Prohm is bringing in serious talent for next year, they have a kid coming in that was being recruited by the high-majors.
Southern Illinois is still a pretty storied basketball program. I'm not saying I want to see Bryan fired. Nor am I saying I want him extended. I just don't think we'd have a problem bringing in a good coach.
Don’t think the problem will be the quality of applicants. The problem will be who the people in charge select. I’m hesitant looking back at some of our other “final” candidates the previous times hiring a coach. Most of those finalist would have us in a worse position than we are currently. I really like our AD like I have said before….he seems all in.
This is just me spouting off the cuff. Don’t know too much about our chancellor. How much does he value athletics….his previous stops were the SWAC, correct? Does he carry over the SWAC way of thinking? This is just hesitation on my part and it could be way off course. If so steer me on course and lessen my worry.
Considering Lane is apparently a finalist at New Mexico State, things are even murkier. Hard to make a major coaching move with one foot out the door (potentially) …
I think if you keep a coach and is getting better and his teams are always competitive eventually you’re going to get what you want… You can keep trying to catch lightning in a bottle, or continue this way. This year has shown me that SIU is getting talent and Mullins is eventually going to win big. I want Mullins to stay because I think the name of the game in the MVC right now is be good enough every year to give yourself a shot, much like Wardle teams.
Also one item that seems to be overlooked is Mullins wants to be here much like Hill in football most likely doesn't want to leave or use this as a stepping stone I am afraid if you catch lightning in a bottle then you have to replace them and a chance of a revolving door of coachesI think if you keep a coach and is getting better and his teams are always competitive eventually you’re going to get what you want… You can keep trying to catch lightning in a bottle, or continue this way. Would it be untoward of me to point out that SIU was predicted to finish 9th in the conference, and they are currently 5 places ahead of that prediction?
The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.

With eight regular conference games left, who knows where this will wind up.
My prediction is, at best, Salukis go 4-4. Hope it's better than that of course. Not sure where that would leave us and too tired to figure it out. But as previously noted many times, it's all about Arch Madness and again, who knows what can happen there.
March on triumphantly!
Ah yes year five and we're celebrating not finishing 9th lol

Well, my first attempt to comment didn't work! I'll try again. I agree. This has always been one of the reasons I really hope Mullins can succeed. It is a valid consideration for the admin when making a decision on his future. You're premise is valid. I just don't see the improvement or talent you're talking about. Being picked 9th in year 5 is not "getting better." And outside of XJ, how has this year shown you that SIU is "getting talent?" The four players we signed in the portal last year have come up a complete zero.

Furgeson has definitely improved. The question is, without X, is someone like him ready to lead the offense? Before you say no, just remember that question is as answered this year with X.

I have faith in someone stepping up. When looking at it on paper you go “ how are we going to replace these number?” However I am not as down on the players as most here. We have some talent and removing X someone or multiples should be able to step up.
Worry right now to me is point guard. Concerning how Miller hasn’t looked great. Will Sharp be the one to step up and we go “ how did this team finish 4 5 or 6 place with X and Sharp?” I hope so.

Not sure how you're seeing this. I'm seeing the opposite.
So just a thought. Switch the outcomes of the 3 Valley games: Bradley, Murray and Mo State. We go 2-1, we are tied for third one game out of 2nd. I know getting smoked by top 2 teams is concerning….but I don’t feel we are not as bad as what many think here. Does our coaching staff have flaws….sure do. Can we improve those things….not sure on that. That’s the real question. I’m going to hear well what would we be without X. Don’t know but we have him. Does someone step up next year? Don’t know. Can the coaches make the improvement, that is going to be the question that needs to be answered.
The key upcoming game is the away game at Belmont. You assume losses to Drake and INSU along with a win against Ill St. Then there are two more "if" games on the schedule, Murray St and UNI at home. I'm assuming a W vs Evansville and another L vs Bradley. We could finish anywhere from 4th (unlikely) to 9th (unlikely). My biggest positive from this season is that despite being overmatched talent wise, as well as outcoached, in many games this team does not give up. That does count for something.
