It's a sad day for SIU basketball as we learn of the passing of Saluki greats Harvey Welch and Seymour Bryson.
Harvey Welch was a pioneer as the first African American basketball player in SIU history. The Centralia, Ill., native appeared in 69 games for SIU from 1952-1954. Welch retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Air Force before returning to Carbondale. He rose to the position of vice chancellor of student affairs in his service to SIU. Welch received a Distinguished Service Award from SIU and named Citizen of the Year in 2007 by the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.
Seymour Bryson still holds the SIU rebounding record with 1,244 and stands 10th in SIU history in scoring. The Quincy, Ill., native appeared in 100 games while scoring 1,529 for SIU between 1956-1959.
We extend our sympathies to the families and friends of these two SIU icons.

Thoughts and prayers to their families. : (
A sad day for all salukis but most of all for their families and close friends.
RIP
Immeasurable loss for the community. Two honorable men. They broke down barriers and were mentors to so very many young men and women. Fantastic Salukis. You both will be missed. Thank you for everything you did for SIU.
Craving a McBride Special!
A sad day indeed. Prayers to the families and friends... Tho’ retired, Col Welch still made a positive influence on Air Force ROTC Det 205 at SIU which sent me on to my 20+ year Air Force Career. God’s peace...
