@saluki-4-life Well it breaks my heart to let Mullins go too, but it just felt to me like it was time to move on.  Honestly, I think my realistic expectations are that things will stay the same or we will get worse, but I still keep following my Salukis and hoping.  I still remember so fondly back in the day when any piece of Saluki apparel I might be wearing would cause other airport business travellers to start talking about our amazing basketball program.  Those were truly the days.  Now we are just another forgotten directional school.

I think expectations that we are going to get back to those days is causing us more harm than good too... College athletics are not the same.  It might be possible but to call it improbable would be a drastic understatement.

zero people know who is being hired. The fact you’re comparing coaches before they are hired is ridiculous. Our last coach was no better than Barry Hinson so we can only go up from here.

If you think we can only go up, I have some news for you...  It can get way way worse.

@quatroschallengesaluki worse than being irrelevant but being a good guy?  That’s basically all we had for the last 12 years zero shot at a title but player management poor game management. 12 years of that. We are rock bottom.

@saluki-4-life worse than a nice guy who doesn’t actually advance us? We’ve had 12 years of basically the same irrelevance but a nice dude at the helm who couldn’t manage players or recruit. Idk if it gets worse than that

Rock bottom was the last 2 years of Lowery.  We’ve just been sitting in the middle for awhile.  Not good enough to beat the good teams but good enough to beat up on the bad teams.

The whole no shot at a title is so stupid.  In Domask and Jones last year we were literally one defensive stop away or a last second open shot from Newton... Stop that narrative.  We were as close as you could be without getting it.

Hey I will be the first to admit that I didn’t like what was going on. We had highs and lows. We had ups and downs. We had a coach signed. We didn’t have a coach signed.
Now we have possibly a third or 4th coach in the mix. We had standards but were they followed? In the long run we will not know if the next coach is going to take us back to the postseason or flame 🔥 out.
The job of the AD/Chancellor is to get the best candidate possible within their power.
It’s their job that is on the line.  This hire for Leonard/Lane will define them.  If it’s a 🔥 out. Then most likely they be looking for other employment opportunities.
As all of our key board members, we all want the best for SIU athletics.  But in the end we won’t lose our jobs if this is a bad hire.  We will just go on and offer our best opinions on what should be done to improve our athletic programs. In the end there is no magic formula to hire a coach. It’s all a crapshoot and in today’s NCAA world with NIL, Portal transfers and such.  We hope to hit the lottery with this hire. If we don’t, we will still support SIU and the next AD will be there to pick the next coach.

Mykel Cleveland and Troy Long playing Division 1 Missouri Valley basketball. Need I say more?

Safe to say dunkledog has lost all credibility.

Anyways ... we hiring a coach today?

This is so uninformed.  Imagine thinking a guy who consistently finished in the top half of the valley as a brand new head coach couldn't recruit or manage players.  It's just laughable.

@saluki-4-life key word without getting it. It’s a fireable offense have them for 4 years and that’s all you get. God awful coaching and recruiting didn’t get them over the hump. Imagine having two mvp candidates in the big ten on your mid major team and getting nothing for it

@saluki-4-life did he recruit good enough players to win the valley? Did he coach well enough to win the valley. 5-27 against top coaches in the valley in 5 years.

@siudawgs I think being mid is one of the worst positions in sports. No where near good enough to win but not the worst either. Just stuck in purgatory.

That argument is a lot more salient in pro sports with the draft ramifications than in college sports. I'd rather SIU draw 5,000-plus fans and be in the upper half of the league than finish 11th or 12th in front of an empty arena.

Would we all like SIU to be better and make the NCAAs? Uh, yeah. I think the trouble SIU is having landing the coach they want tells us that it ain't that easy in this era of college hoops.

Holy hell. YES HE DID. They literally had it in their grasp and Rein Mast made a 24 foot 3.  That is sports but they absolutely did.
