There are a couple here, especially M4L, that would have complained about ANY hire we made, but I have to say that this hiring is incredibly disappointing.  I wanted Mullins to stay but understood the decision, especialy considering the way the team regressed this season vs last, the way they finished the season and his near incompetent records vs the top of the Valley and in the conf tournament, BUT we hired Nagy?  That is the nationwide search results?  I'll do some additional research to see if I can find some positives, but right now this is bad IMO.

@saluki-4-life guy has has his teams in 5 NCAA’s, 3 NIT’s, and a cbi in the last 12 years. Sounds great to me.

What has he done in the portal era?

Don't list cbi as a real accomplishment

Bryan Mullins was awful at the portal.

Totally agree.  X, AJ Ferguson, Rupert, Hensley... awful

Rupert and Ferguson are decent but backup types. Xavier Johnson was nothing special until his 5th year of college basketball. Hensley is awful and was completely overmatched in the MVC.

You cant be citing X as not a GREAT portal pick up.  This is hilarious.

X is the only good transfer portal get we’ve gotten. Those other three were at best role players on a team that wasn’t good enough to keep their coach from getting fired.

Nagy can coach his ass off! His D1 ncaa record 357-254 and that includes several very rough years when South Dakota State transitioned to D1. His success will depend upon how his staff recruits and manages the portal. He can coach circles around where Bryan Mullins is right now, but can he recruit better. Time will tell.

Wright State has Jaheem Webber, a 3 star 6-10 center from Normal as their only commit.  The fun irony is he was an Illinois Wolves

And even then Johnson was a pretty meh player until his 5th year of playing.

As a Bears fan the name Nagy gives me PTSD.

Joking aside 5 tournament appearances in the last 13 years is decent and infinitely better than what we've had here.

I'm going to save judgement for the season and we'll see what happens.

We weren't going to get a top level up and coming coach after firing our last 3 coaches, losing every player but one and no postseasons in 16 years. It's just the current state of the program.

Can we just see how he does before burning down the city please?

Agreed. Once again, I go back to my Dayton connection, because I had the consulting job with the Dayton company when Nagy took over at Wright State. The previous coach was fired under circumstances very similar to the Mullins departure -- consistent winning records, no NCAA appearances -- and he also made the mistake of criticizing the AD in the press a few days before the firing went down (which Mullins, classy to the end, did not do). The previous coach's recruits flew the coop, decimating the roster. Nagy came over from South Dakota State -- where he built a big winner in Division II, had some really bad seasons after the Jackrabbits went Division I, then rebounded with three NCAA appearances in five years. He rebuilt and regrouped at Wright State and had them in the NCAAs in his second season, and followed that with an NIT appearance, another NCAA appearance and 25 wins in the year the pandemic eliminated the postseason. I might also add that Wright State is not the easiest place to win; it's a commuter-oriented school with a tight budget and stiff competition for in-state recruits. His record the past two seasons gives me some pause, and I have some reservations about his ability to navigate the portal. But nobody we interviewed was perfect -- as a baseball announcer I used to listen to a lot when I went to SIU often said, "Perfection was hung on a cross 2,000 years ago" (appropriate for Holy Week, I guess). Only time will tell if Nagy can win at SIU, but to act like he's some shlub who's destined for certain failure (no matter how much a few people around here might root for him to fail) simply isn't warranted.

You have got to be effing kidding me

Now here are some questions to be answered by the administration?

1 Is this a safe hire(57) years old.  Will not be looking at moving on up?

2 Where the other candidates that were interviewed not going to provide stability because if successful moving on in 3-4 years?

3 What makes this hire better than the other individuals interviewed?
4 How did he get to the top of your hire list as opposed to the other candidates?

5 Are we thought of as being the destination job outside our home area now as we were once before

I am in the camp that would’ve liked to see Coach Mullins extended to give him a little more time. And I also didn’t like the way he was let go from (what I’ve heard).

However, I am also excited for Scott Nagy and want to get this thing going.

@kiwiball idk about all that but the guy has a successful record and he has a 6’10 Illinois wolves kid from normal. Obviously the last connections to the wolves wasn’t that strong if wright state could out recruit them.
