I think I agree that Smithpeters is a bit of an underwhelming hire. It doesn’t seem like the direction you go when you fire a coach who won 42 games the past two seasons and if Missouri State gets McCollum it looks even more underwhelming.
You would think for SIU to make the move it did by firing Mullins that they would want to make a splash hire — someone with D1 experience, or at least substantial D2 experience.
That said, I’ll support Smithpeters if he’s the man, hope that he can build a better staff than Mullins, and that he can recruit like hell.

so you’re saying replacing a first time head coach and the citing that you need to match up better with Ben Jacobson and then hiring a first time head coach sounds like a load of garbage? We are a joke lol hopefully KS can get ineligible D1 players at SIU!
Sigh I will make some calls. I’m thinking that is more mis direction. I’m pretty sure it’s KS .
It’s misdirection, don’t waste your time. Even the Mullins knew the writing was on the wall and KS was taking his job. It’s over. He’s the coach. Our admin are puppets. We are gonna suck.
You’re really irritating. Even if Kyle is the guy, it’s not a disaster by any stretch.
I am GUESSING that I will not like, at least not initially, the next coach of SIU as much as I liked Mulins (personally speaking). I certainly will NOT be as excited when he is announced as I was when Mulins was (I STILL remember the press conference............I was giddy!!)
But.............................................
I'll bet MY LIFE that the next SIU coach wins as many, or more, NCAA or NIT games in his FIRST year as Mullins did in his 5 years.
I'd also bet a decent amount of money, that the next coach wins as many, or more, MVC tournament games in the next 5 years as Mullins did (2).
Lastly, I'd bet, albeit a smaller amount, that the next coach wins as many or more games overall than Mullins did.
In the end, it's the winning and results that matter. We can argue until we're blue in the face that Mullins would have turned it around as soon as next year (and that is quite possible with the core he had coming back and having Howard for a full year), but that is a moot point. I don't believe it's fair or sensible, and wreaks of emotion, to say that we will only win 5 games next year, we will be horrible in the foreseeable future, etc.
You know the episode of The Office where Ryan creates a fake website (www.creedthoughts.gov.www/creedthoughts) (and it’s actually just a Word Document) to protect the internet from Creed?
Anyway, we should do something similar for Saluki 4 Life and Dunkeldog to battle it out.

Well, KS does have head coach experience; just not major college experience.
But, 241-73 is at least something.

Largely agree. I would add:
1). Leonard said he wants someone who can match wits with the top MVC coaches. How could it possibly be construed as anything other than a giant risk to put someone whose head coaching experience came at the JUCO level, which is a vastly different style than the D1 game, in charge?
2). Is Smithpeters on any other school’s radar? Guessing not, because you usually don’t pluck assistant coaches from teams that are four games below the next-to-last team in their conference.
If he’s the guy, it has all the earmarks of a power play by a local bigwig and not a concerted attempt to hire someone who gives the program the best chance to quickly rise up the MVC pecking order.

Hinson was underwhelming, feeling we opted for good recruiting and graduation rates, but no post-season play.
Watching Watson go to Southern Indiana and finding success, was icing on the "Hey I was ready to coach" cake.
Seeing who the team recruits is one thing, seeing who tosses their hat this direction could be another. Honestly I am ready for another Weber to come in show he can win and move on, eventually we will get someone to be a legacy and stay.

Who else is after Smithpeters right now as a head coach...anyone? If he wasn't from the area, do you think we'd even be considering him? He's not even a top assistant at Missouri. I thought we were hiring a proven commodity, someone who didn't have to learn on the job. JUCO ball is not the same, it's just not. He had some good teams at Logan, no doubt, but it took him 10 years to get on staff at a 4 year university (maybe some of that was by choice). He has showed he can recruit at the JC level and had a hand in putting together the most recent class they have coming in, but if you are going to praise him for those wins he has to share some of the blame for the roster he helped put together this year that has been an unmitigated disaster.
I've got no problem if you want to bring him in as a top assistant to help with recruiting and get some seasoning under an experienced HC, but he could also get that at Missouri so not sure why he would come here to do that.
If after all this, the end result is Smithpeters as HC then I call BS on all the talk from the AD. If that's the best you can do, you should have given Mullins more time, full stop.

Wouldn’t care much about year 1 personally, It could be a shitshow or it could be a surprise with the portal.
I think people focusing on Mullins’ win total are missing the fact that there were countless empty wins there playing trash schedules. Whoever the new coach is will be about 3 wins against top 3 teams in the Valley behind Mullins from day 1.
Sigh I will make some calls. I’m thinking that is more mis direction. I’m pretty sure it’s KS .

Exactly, and make no mistake… it’s Smithpeters.
also I’d wager a TON he doesn’t win as many MVC games in 5 years as Mullins did.

If the new coach had a worse MVC record than Mullins and also wasn’t good enough in Arch Madness and hitting the low bar of an NIT, then it would be a failed firing and hiring. They could finish with a worse record and still hit those highs though which would make this a good firing/hiring

bradley isn’t gonna make the NIT this year. Post season at large can’t be a barometer anymore, it’s rigged designed to keep the likes of us out.

I think Bradley is gonna be in the NIT but we’ll see with the new format. They were good enough in NET and KenPom though and could use the Hickman injury excuse for a reason they weren’t better.
If this is a done deal, I would assume it will be announced sometime very soon.
