I would certainly prefer hiring an outside firm like Korn Ferry and having an exhaustive national search run by a fairly large bureaucracy. That said, I can name plenty of times that SIU did all that and ended up with bad candidates (I’m talking academic and administrative positions as well not just athletics.)
Also if Lane leaves it might leave more room for different voices to bring in outside names.
That said if we bring in a solid outside candidate we are still going to have some people who would rather toss their toys out of the sandbox. Don’t be one of those people.
If this is a done deal, I would assume it will be announced sometime very soon.
Or, they could talk to some other people and take a week or two to give it the appearance of a legit search.
I would assume any big announcements would be after the final 4, unless they want to try and prevent transfer bleeding. Both are possible in this case.
Most real coaching deals are done schmoozing in the suites and banquets around the NCAA tournament.
Leonard sounded quite sincere during his interview about casting a wide net, but during 40 years in the workplace I came to learn that more often than not management enters the hiring process -- whether it's an external hire, internal hire or an evaluation of both inside and outside applicants -- with a "preferred candidate." I benefited from that a few times, but were a few other cases in which I thought about applying for a promotion but found out that the decision basically already had been made. I'd always tell the boss, "Look, it sounds as if you've already settled on someone, so let's not go through an interview and waste each other's time unless I've got a real chance." Not once did they try to talk me out of it. That very well could be the case with SIU and Smithpeters.

Even if Robert Montgomery Knight, Gene Keady and Mike Krzyzewski apply, management will still go with their pick.
This all would make a lot more sense if we knew details of how Jerrance Howard fit in this equation.
@salukiholic there’s just so little info out there and totally understand having to protect sources it’s always hard just hearing bits of info but nothing substantial
Seeing the thread is why I don’t post nearly as much anymore. People are exhausting lol. I’m not happy about Mullins, but I think Smithpeters is a decent hire. People bashing him for coaching JUCO need to get a grip. It’s not “glorified high school ball.” It is a different style, sure. Also, he wasn’t trapped in JUCO for 10 years. He had multiple assistant offers at other schools, but waited for the right opportunity because he didn’t want to give up his great program for a mediocre job.
I’m not saying he is the perfect hire or anyone for that matter, but the bashing of Smithpeters for no fault of his own is absolutely ridiculous.
So what's Tom Crean up to these days

Excellent post. It is exhausting. I would like to see an extensive search, of course, but I believe Smithpeters has a chance to be a pretty good hire. In fact, if Missouri had been decent this season, the narrative surrounding him undoubtedly would be much more positive (and remember, Mizzou was very good last season and could be very good again next season with a great recruiting class coming in). And, if he is, indeed, the next coach, I sure as hell am not going to root for him to fail.
Okay. So you are 100% positive it KSP. Are you then willing to never post on this site again if it's not? Put up or ...If this is a done deal, I would assume it will be announced sometime very soon.

yeah this is what’s happening… this is our national search. Pretending to do some real work
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

If SIU hires Kyle Smithpeters, I will give him a fair shot and pull for his success.
But you can't pull the plug on a guy like Mullins, saying we need a big-time coach who can take down DeVries, Jacobson, etc., and win big in St. Louis, and then, on paper, take a large risk with a former JUCO coach whose current program is in the toilet, and seemingly is in demand at SIU largely because of his local roots, and not expect push-back. Even in your post, a "decent hire" is how you frame it.
The stakes for this hire are high. Sorry if that is fatiguing, but that's reality.
Agreed re: Smithpeters. Some folks seem to be a little overly emotionally involved. Regarding comments regarding donors...of course donors are going to want some input. I was associated with three major universities during my career (whose athletic programs are in the P5 conferences). In addition, one of my high school teammates was a HC at another P5 school and I can assure you that major donors do not had over their money without expecting some level of access/input. The only question is the amount/level of influence they may have. It may be less or more at an institution at the mid-major level. I do not know the answer to that.Seeing the thread is why I don’t post nearly as much anymore. People are exhausting lol. I’m not happy about Mullins, but I think Smithpeters is a decent hire. Trust me, you are not who I am referring to. You’re one of the more knowledgeable posters on here. I understand the questions regarding hiring him, just don’t like the bashing for no reason.
IDK if it does turn out to be Smithpeters the biggest blunder of the whole situation might be the interview spelling out what SIU was looking for. Smithpeters might come in and be good, but why spell out something that he is not. You can’t sit there and say we want x,y,z and then give us c in smithpeters. Kinda sounds like a used car salesman by doing this. Bait and switch.
And by saying this, I am not saying I am against or for the KSP hire. The interview sounded like you want a veteran coach with “banners” and I just don’t see KSP as that.
