Sounds to me he has his guy. Also not sure how D-1 basketball hires work but hire via phone interviews….does the future hire not want to see facilities, campus, etc…..or does he already know the such. Hmm
IDK if it does turn out to be Smithpeters the biggest blunder of the whole situation might be the interview spelling out what SIU was looking for. Smithpeters might come in and be good, but why spell out something that he is not. You can’t sit there and say we want x,y,z and then give us c in smithpeters. Kinda sounds like a used car salesman by doing this. Bait and switch.
And by saying this, I am not saying I am against or for the KSP hire. The interview sounded like you want a veteran coach with “banners” and I just don’t see KSP as that.
100% agree. Don’t say you fired Mullins to bring in a more experienced coach who can outcoach the better Valley coaches. Then go the KSP route. Smithpeters might be great I don’t know, but to tell the fan base we are going after such and such, but dont is BS.
We will get what we deserve.
A response from a Mizzou fan on Twitter on the potential Smithpeters hire by SIU:
”Was an assistant coach for a 25-10 team in 2022-2023 and was a key recruiter for a top 5 recruiting class in the country this year. Learn ball.”
This whole thing is beginning to stink. If Smithpeters is hired,it sure seems likely one or more donors is calling the shots to hire a pal.
I think I agree that Smithpeters is a bit of an underwhelming hire. It doesn’t seem like the direction you go when you fire a coach who won 42 games the past two seasons and if Missouri State gets McCollum it looks even more underwhelming.
You would think for SIU to make the move it did by firing Mullins that they would want to make a splash hire — someone with D1 experience, or at least substantial D2 experience.
That said, I’ll support Smithpeters if he’s the man, hope that he can build a better staff than Mullins, and that he can recruit like hell.
Largely agree. I would add:
1). Leonard said he wants someone who can match wits with the top MVC coaches. How could it possibly be construed as anything other than a giant risk to put someone whose head coaching experience came at the JUCO level, which is a vastly different style than the D1 game, in charge?
2). Is Smithpeters on any other school’s radar? Guessing not, because you usually don’t pluck assistant coaches from teams that are four games below the next-to-last team in their conference.
If he’s the guy, it has all the earmarks of a power play by a local bigwig and not a concerted attempt to hire someone who gives the program the best chance to quickly rise up the MVC pecking order.
Smells like Greg Cook or Poshard!
I said before I think JUCO ball is glorified HS. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it is vastly different than D1. If they hire KS, I will be very unhappy and will certainly not expect much.
I'd rather see a very experienced HS coach with a great record of winning (Rich Herrin..) than a guy who coached JUCO for 10 years and has very little D1 experience (for a crappy team no less.) JUCO years are like reverse dog years --- 7 equals one year of D1.
If Leonard didn't reach out to guys like McCollum or Terry Johnson at Purdue, he should have to sweep the floor at halftime for a year or two.
I actually have a very hard time believing it is KS after hearing the Leonard spiel about HC with sustained success.
Leonard's remark that we could have one tomorrow could mean he already has his guy and everything else is a sham.
Seems like Lane didn’t get the NMSU job, they hired an interim.
So they must not have been satisfied with any of the candidates.Seems like Lane didn’t get the NMSU job, they hired an interim.

Good news for Southern.
By the way, after a search of one year, Illinois State also hired their interim.

Do you have a link for that? I looked online; all I could find was a recent article stating they would make an announcement within the next week.

Just going to say I don’t foresee many high school coaches making the leap to D1 and having success. Smithpeters may or may not be the right coach….but at least he has been on the D1 scene for at least 3 years and has coached juco for many. He has recruiting ties at least. And Missouri made the tourney last year.

Pretty good last few days for Southern.
Lane is staying put, and athletics shows they aren’t messing around with the basketball program.
If KS is the guy I believe calling foul would be warranted because he doesn't check many of the boxes that Leonard said he was looking for in my opinion including post season success which Kyle wasn't very good at either at the 24th district or JUCO nationals

I thought he had coached JAL to 3 straight JUCO Sweet 16's? I'm not saying at all that it would translate to D1-MVC level, I just thought he had some prior success.
