Pretty good last few days for Southern.
Lane is staying put, and athletics shows they aren’t messing around with the basketball program.
Assuming they are actually going to put forth resources that it takes to win in this league. Can’t have a bottom half basketball budget in the MVC and expect to win it (which really is my beef with firing Mullins).

We need a higher budget and an indoor practice facility regardless of who the coach is. I wish those things were in place for Bryan but some people on here have a hard time accepting that life isn’t fair.
Leonard sounded quite sincere during his interview about casting a wide net, but during 40 years in the workplace I came to learn that more often than not management enters the hiring process -- whether it's an external hire, internal hire or an evaluation of both inside and outside applicants -- with a "preferred candidate." I benefited from that a few times, but were a few other cases in which I thought about applying for a promotion but found out that the decision basically already had been made. I'd always tell the boss, "Look, it sounds as if you've already settled on someone, so let's not go through an interview and waste each other's time unless I've got a real chance." Not once did they try to talk me out of it. That very well could be the case with SIU and Smithpeters.
Yes, I too got pretty good at sniffing out alleged openings for which it was obvious they already had the position filled. The "tell" would usually be in the form of: (1) an oddly specific qualification requirement; or (2) a qualification requirement that you would expect to be listed but wasn't.
Nothing jumps out at me from what Lane said that fits (1), but the fact that "significant D1 coaching experience" was not mentioned could be interpreted as fitting with (2).
That would have been enough to put me on the fence about applying, or as you say, at least asking if we would be wasting time by going through the process.
(Inflammatory political snark)
If KS is the guy I believe calling foul would be warranted because he doesn't check many of the boxes that Leonard said he was looking for in my opinion including post season success which Kyle wasn't very good at either at the 24th district or JUCO nationals
I thought he had coached JAL to 3 straight JUCO Sweet 16's? I'm not saying at all that it would translate to D1-MVC level, I just thought he had some prior success.
Yes Smithpeters was a very successful coach for 10 years at the Juco level. But for some on here you can go look at a coach at any level..high school, d2, d3 but don’t you dare mention a Juco coach. Again I am not pro smithpeters….I’d go a different direction, but to say this guy is worthless and all that it is kind of over reacting.
If I were a coach I would be rather apprehensive about this job considering what just happened to Bryan.

I’m too worried about the budget issue, at least as it pertains to head coach salary. Mullins was pulling 500K, which I think put him around 4th in the Valley.
SIU seems to have donors who are willing to put up big money for basketball.
In an attempt to add a touch of levity to these sometimes contentious proceedings, it's worth noting that four or five days ago, Devin Johnson of Texas A&M was the hot name as a possible new coach. He's since disappeared from the radar screen as the spotlight has shifted elsewhere. Not sure he's been mentioned at all since maybe Friday.

He would be one that meets none of the criteria mentioned in his interviews.
A response from a Mizzou fan on Twitter on the potential Smithpeters hire by SIU:
”Was an assistant coach for a 25-10 team in 2022-2023 and was a key recruiter for a top 5 recruiting class in the country this year. Learn ball.”
If we hired Kyle after last year, it would be universally praised. I still want a search and I think there are better options but people pretending this is a joke hire are completely wrong.
never won a game at nationals upset at district tournament and got an at large bid for juco nationals but had little success at the nationals not bad mouthing but that is what I remember brother Tyler took over and won it allIf KS is the guy I believe calling foul would be warranted because he doesn't check many of the boxes that Leonard said he was looking for in my opinion including post season success which Kyle wasn't very good at either at the 24th district or JUCO nationals

@dawgbytes getting paid 400k and not winning a NIT or NCAA game and only 2 wins in conference tourneys? I'm not hating here but some would ask why it took so long.
