I hope Leonard knows what he's doing, because the reception of Mullins' being fired hasn't exactly attracted great press and reactions outside of the SIU community. And we'll likely be competing with Missouri St. and UIC for some of those same coaches.

The stuff I've read has mostly pointed out the ridiculous article released by Weber on siusalukis.com that sounded exactly like the hype you give for a new hire. Quite sure Leonard didn't approve that, and if I was Leonard, I would be very unhappy with the SID and he sure as hell would know about it.

And while I'm talking about the sports information department, seems like there's a real willingness to get lazy and just throw vids up on siusalukis.com in the last year.....

And the new web page is just crap IMO...just love to sit there and watch the maroon cover sheet spin every time I go back to the home page! Duh!

I have to say, I understand that some are unhappy with the firing of BM. I would have given him a short extension myself to see if Howard could improve the recruiting. But get the hell over it.

I appreciate that the powers that be want to excel and are working for that goal, because in 5 years of BM, we were not excelling and possibly trending down next year.

I wish BM well, but I'm a Saluki fan more than any individual coach and I want nothing but the best for my school.

Go Dawgs!

I know SIU got shit for the Mullins firing press release but I saw no problem with it.  Mullins is a good person and a Saluki legend, he deserved a send-off like that.

Would you be willing to post the link. I almost never go to that site. Its terrible after looking at it. Agree that it was mostly a bad media post with the press release. That got panned here: https://awfulannouncing.com/college-basketball/southern-illinois-coach-bryan-mullins-firing-press-release.html

Most of my info is coming from reactions of folks I know, reddit, and other teams' boards. And also a very biased article posted Friday morning as an op-ed by someone who is close with the Mullins family, but the paper has a circulation of about 100K - article is largely about the SID gaffe as well: https://www.dailyherald.com/20240315/college-sports/southern-illinois-letting-go-of-legendary-mullins-is-an-odd-decision/

Agree that people need to move on. But also could see SIU ending up in the basement for a while and no one wants that. There's a reason it was a polarizing decision and I have no reason for faith in this AD just yet.

One question….if Coach Mullins was “the powers at be’s” person, would they have been as driven to succeed or would they have given him a little more time?  Just a question, with no right or wrong answer.

People from the outside think it's a bizarre announcement because of the praise given to Mullins. However, I think it was fine. He's a revered hall of famer who you don't bash on the way out. I think it's a case of outside folks not understanding the relationship between the coach, the community and the university.

Regarding the local push back, it was easy for folks to move on from CLO because even though he was revered as a great player and future hall of famer, he destroyed the program. Hinson had no previous ties to the university so it was easy to move on following his mediocre tenure. Folks grew emotionally close to Mullins and many, especially the non savvy, very casual basketball fans can't comprehend the deficiencies he has at this point as a coach. Tough situation and kind of a perfect storm for hurt feelings.

The poster above stated he was happy that the powers that be want to excel.  My question was if Coach Mullins was a Chancellor Lane guy….would he get extra time or if in fact he would have been fired no matter who’s “guy” he was.

Agreed. The press release showed a touch of class. Maybe it wasn't a typical release for a coach's firing, and I can see where outsiders thought it was odd, but you have to put things in their proper context. Also, I just re-read the release and everything written about Bryan was true (the only questionable line in the release, as far as I can tell, was the last one about a "national search" for a coach).

”…Non savvy very casual…” respectfully you can blow it out your ass. I’m not going to rehash everything again, but no one said he had no deficiencies. Most just wanted the athletic department to exercise some patience with a young coach who has given a lot to this university.

  1. I can’t believe that Kyle Smithpeters is seriously being considered for our Head Coach Job.  Is he considered a guy who is ready to take over a D1 program? Will he be interviewing for other mid-major jobs? Excelling at the juco level typically doesn’translate to the D1 level. He may be the man for the job but at first glance he doesn’t seem like the best candidate.

@oledawg If Smithpeters was THE man, he would have been announced by now. Missouri was knocked out of the SEC tournament on Wednesday.

@siudawgs as a 20 year season ticket holder I can attest that the energy in the Arena (still just the Arena to me) was way up under Mullins.  Also the published numbers are tickets sold even if they aren't used.  There were many games under Lowery and Hinson that there were no where near the announced attendance actually at the games.

I really hope Tim knows what he's doing and already had several potential replacements lined up.

Geez, sensitive much? I wasn't talking about you. I was referring to the big push back, especially on social media by some fans who obviously know very little about basketball and do not follow the program closely. If you read some of the comments on twitter and Facebook they are very emotional, but not very fact based. Seriously, sounds like you need to relax...

You are trying to imply that “many, especially those not savvy or casual fans” are just too emotional to understand Mullins deficiencies and it’s just bullshit. So tired of reading that or “raise your expectations” on here as if it’s some grand argument.

There are plenty of people that both wanted to keep Mullins and understand he had areas where he needed to grow and we were willing to give him more time to figure it out, not unlimited time, just more than you. Plenty of “savvy” basketball minds outside SIU with no emotional attachment that think this was a bad move (I would say the majority).
