You have a reading comprehension problem, I wasn't implying anything. I think I spelled it out quite clearly. Also, I was a huge Mullins fan. I was willing to put aside his shortcomings and wanted him to get a short extension until very late in the season when we totally collapsed the last 3 games. I don't care who is upset, it was obvious coach Mullins wasn't progressing enough or learning on the job. You need to seriously move on. You're going to give yourself an ulcer.Geez, sensitive much? I wasn't talking about you. I was referring to the big push back, especially on social media by some fans who obviously know very little about basketball and do not follow the program closely. If you read some of the comments on twitter and Facebook they are very emotional, but not very fact based. Seriously, sounds like you need to relax...People from the outside think it's a bizarre announcement because of the praise given to Mullins. However, I think it was fine. He's a revered hall of famer who you don't bash on the way out. I think it's a case of outside folks not understanding the relationship between the coach, the community and the university.
Regarding the local push back, it was easy for folks to move on from CLO because even though he was revered as a great player and future hall of famer, he destroyed the program. Hinson had no previous ties to the university so it was easy to move on following his mediocre tenure. Folks grew emotionally close to Mullins and many, especially the non savvy, very casual basketball fans can't comprehend the deficiencies he has at this point as a coach. Tough situation and kind of a perfect storm for hurt feelings.
”…Non savvy very casual…” respectfully you can blow it out your ass. I’m not going to rehash everything again, but no one said he had no deficiencies. Most just wanted the athletic department to exercise some patience with a young coach who has given a lot to this university.
You are trying to imply that “many, especially those not savvy or casual fans” are just too emotional to understand Mullins deficiencies and it’s just bullshit. So tired of reading that or “raise your expectations” on here as if it’s some grand argument.
There are plenty of people that both wanted to keep Mullins and understand he had areas where he needed to grow and we were willing to give him more time to figure it out, not unlimited time, just more than you. Plenty of “savvy” basketball minds outside SIU with no emotional attachment that think this was a bad move (I would say the majority).

Obviously not or I would understand. So is it the emotion that clouds my judgement or a lack of basketball comprehension? Those were your two arguments.
I’ve accepted that he’s gone, doesn’t mean I have to like the decision.
Again, I originally said I wasn't referring to you. Seriously, let it rest man. That's fine that you don't like the decision, but your incessant whining is getting pretty old. Just my opinion. Sounds like from all the polling you have been doing with Saluki fans I'm definitely in the minority. FYI, I was at every Arch Madness game and spoke to quite a few folks. I would say it was 50/50 at best. I would actually lean toward more folks I spoke with agreed with the decision. I guess we spoke to different people...You have a reading comprehension problem, I wasn't implying anything. I think I spelled it out quite clearly. Also, I was a huge Mullins fan. @resaluki-88 I am part of the “local pushback” you were referencing. We can get back on topic now.
Agree to disagree.
Western Kentucky makes the tournament in year one under Lutz. Kept a few key guys and navigated the portal well. Keep the faith. No reason it can't happen here
I have to say, I understand that some are unhappy with the firing of BM. I would have given him a short extension myself to see if Howard could improve the recruiting. But get the hell over it.
I appreciate that the powers that be want to excel and are working for that goal, because in 5 years of BM, we were not excelling and possibly trending down next year.
I wish BM well, but I'm a Saluki fan more than any individual coach and I want nothing but the best for my school.
Go Dawgs!
One question….if Coach Mullins was “the powers at be’s” person, would they have been as driven to succeed or would they have given him a little more time? Just a question, with no right or wrong answer.
i don’t understand your statement in quotation marks. “ the powers at be’s”
The poster above stated he was happy that the powers that be want to excel. My question was if Coach Mullins was a Chancellor Lane guy….would he get extra time or if in fact he would have been fired no matter who’s “guy” he was.
Very possibly he would get extra time because the powers that be are currently humans, not yet AI chatbots with decision making power.
After all, Barbecue got too many years because Mrs. Barbecue and Mrs. "Jetset" Cook were buds.
The more I look into it the more I like Spradlin. I think I would be happy with either Spradlin or McCollum. On paper they would definitely be my 1st and 2nd choices. If it were the Youngstown State coach he might have already been named as they lost in their tournament final. Unless they were planning on going to the CBI.
Beside Lutz doing it this year, Dennis Gates also did it at Missouri last year by bringing players with him and mixing them with transfers. He has a highly-rated recruiting class coming in if the failure of this season does not scare them off.
‘There has been much talk on here about junior college success relating to D1 success. Missouri has the last two junior college players of the year, both from Logan. One has done well while the other has not. Hard to predict how success at the junior college level will transfer to the D1 level.
Just a quick side note to my post. I still prefer Spradlin and McCollum, but Dan Monson would certainly be an interesting hire...The more I look into it the more I like Spradlin. Despite this year’s magic, Monson hasn’t been a very good coach. Long Beach has a ton of resources compared to their peers and they’ve always underachieved
He's 63. Been successful at Gonzaga and Minnesota (after recruiting scandals hobbled them). Hasn't had much success at LBSU in recent years, but upset Jim Les and UC-Davis to get back to the NCAAs lame-duck.
I’ll be watching Morehead State next week.
I plan to do the same while keeping an eye on the D-II tournament. McCollum's Northwest Missouri State team won its first-round game in a blowout and plays again tonight. Ferris State (coached by Andy Bronkema, who Eli Hoover suggested as a possible candidate) also won and plays tonight. I looked up Bronkema and he's sort of a "McCollum Lite" -- has won one national title at Ferris with a .731 winning percentage over 11 seasons. Being based in central Michigan, he would not be as familiar with Missouri Valley recruiting areas as McCollum is.
Spradlin gets #3 seed Illinois
Here is am under the radar candidate I stumbled across South Dakota St coach Eric Henderson checks all the boxes and learned under McDermott at Creighton and took over for TJ Otzelberger
