Now I’m torn between wanting Morehead to knock off Illinois on Thursday, yet wanting them to lose so a bigger name doesn’t come knocking on Spradlin’s door.
They're not knocking off Illinois..not even close.
Your concerns will always be valid anyway, if he comes to SIU and has a great year in a couple years he's gone anyway... Revolving door at the mid major level, which is why expectations need to be much lower than Tim Leonard saying we should be making the tournament every couple years... If he really believes that every coach we could hire would be fired within 5 seasons.
Bruce Weber was hired to be a stepping stone coach. I don’t care if he has success and he’s gone at some point. It’s been 16 years since SIU was relevant in college basketball and that’s way too long.
Question to the group.
How would you feel if we ended up being like InSU this year. On year 3 we don’t reach NCAA but reach NIT, then coach leaves creating a total rebuild again. Ideally you want a coach to stay but having to rebuild say every three years would be rough. Or do you want a Wardle/Jacobson where they stay but the highs are nearly as high as InSU this year but you get a tourney every 6 years or so and coach stays?
@johnny-utah I think that's one of the main reasons we all wanted Mullins so much. We had hopes of success, and due to his ties to SIU, we hoped to have him around a long time. Similar to Nick Hill.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
Leonard is just the puppet here. If I were him I would be exploring job opportunities right now. The chancellor is the de facto AD.I hope Leonard knows what he's doing, because the reception of Mullins' being fired hasn't exactly attracted great press and reactions outside of the SIU community. And we'll likely be competing with Missouri St. and UIC for some of those same coaches.
The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.

To paraphrase our AD. we should be making the Big Dance every 2-3 years. What kinda goal is that. Our goal should be making the Big Dance every year. Hire a coach that has that goal. Not well, if we get there every few years it will be ok. Our goal should be at the top of the valley every year.
Had Mullins made an NCAA tournament, would he have stayed if a Power 5 school had come calling with a big paycheck, an unlimited budget and a chance to make the postseason every year? We'll never know.
I'll frame it another way: What was one of the reasons Hinson spent seven seasons at SIU? Because he never rose above mediocrity and no one else wanted him.
Would love to see our new coach reach a few NCAA tournaments and stay forever and ever, but I'll gladly take a guy who gets to a tournament or two and moves on after five years or so.

I’d rather have the 2nd option (NCAA Tournaments) but either option is better than the last 16 years of SIU Basketball so give me either

What about an NIT after 3 then a total rebuild…the odds of hitting a Schertz again is not likely especially at a school like InSU. So is the high of this year enough to offset the possible lows of the years to come? It’s a good problem to have….having a coach everyone wants but it’s a good discussion point.
Aren't you just a ray of sunshine. I know you're upset about Mullins but it's done. No amount of complaining is going to change it.Now I’m torn between wanting Morehead to knock off Illinois on Thursday, yet wanting them to lose so a bigger name doesn’t come knocking on Spradlin’s door.

Just win!
Its been stated many times on here that its the case. Leonard wanted to extend Mullins, not fire him.Leonard is just the puppet here. If I were him I would be exploring job opportunities right now. @salukiworld don’t be surprised if Lowery is in the mix at UIC
Honestly, I could See Mullins landing on his feet at DePaul or UIC, (His record at SIU is a lot better than those programs current track records, and closer ties to recruiting for the area could put him as a top contender.)
Nobody is looking to hire a coach that just got fired.
@grimper57 ohio state fired their coach and depaul hired him. one of his new hired as an asst. coach was an ex fired coach from Miami
