Coaching Changes on Twitter seems to be backing off on Spradlin to SIU saying it might not be as done as we all thought
I finally found some talk among Morehead State fans (yes, apparently they do exist) about Spradlin. Link below.
Nothing groundbreaking, but they say the same thing I’ve been saying: I’m not sure, right now, all things considered, Southern is attractive enough for Spradlin (or someone in a similar position to him) to make the jump.
The only way I see it happening is if Leonard puts together one hell of a contract. Something in the ballpark of, say, 750K. That’s about triple his current salary at Morehead (250K) and would make him one of the highest paid coaches in the MVC.
For reference, Casey Alexander at Belmont is around 800K; Prohm at Murray is around 530K; Pedon at ISU is at 550K. All these guys have different resumes than Spradlin, but just for reference. I think Mullins was around 500K.
Just a hunch, but I do think SIU could pull that kind of salary off, and it’s possible they want to get back to relevance enough to make it happen.
Edit: Spradlin’s current salary might be closer to 300K.

So based on the hint Barkeep I'd say Johnson is still likely? Seems like the only one of our serious candidates still playing
Are you guys pumped yet!? Fired Mullins to hire a first time coach!? This is what you all wanted!! Enjoy!!!!

A first time coach…you mean like Mullins was?
I am among those that are holding the university to a high standard after dismissing Mullins and talking big about needing to win at a high level.
Not going to be happy if it’s a risky/stretch of a hire.
So if it’s not Spradlin, did he pass or did we? I imagine maybe he just wanted more than we could offer. It sounds like Ben M. isn’t going to be the guy at MSU according to their board anyway. Some were saying he wanted too much, if that’s the case he isn’t coming here.
I think maybe our leadership over estimated the draw of SIU given our resources and NIL? Established coaches, especially those looking to move up, want a good situation in that area, especially if a complete rebuild is on the horizon. It may very well require us to hire someone looking to be a head coach as more incentive.

gonna fire a dude cause he wasn’t experienced enough to hire one 5 years behind him inexperience! Can’t make this up! 😂
Who are you referring to? If it’s Kent Williams, I agree. It’ll probably be the death of SIU Basketball. The other options on the board are still worth taking the chance on though than the 5 years I’ve seen from Mullins.

we were way better off sticking with Mullins.

The first weekend of the tournament isn’t even over yet. Check how many programs that fired their coach have already made hires.
These things take time. If we’re sitting in a couple weeks, then I’m starting to get worried, but not now.

As I’ve been saying, if it’s not Spradlin (and I’m beginning to think that’s not happening); the backups options aren’t going to be anything exciting. I’m sure we’re gonna circle back to Smithpeters or Johnson. I don’t mind either option personally but it’s not better than Spradlin. There wasn’t a magic bullet better than him.
It’s always been our man Kyle Smithpeters as I said from the very beginning. Just you wait.
