Should the hire be Smithpeters or Johnson, Leonard needs to be asked some hard, potentially unpleasant questions at the introductory news conference. Somehow, though, I doubt he'll have to deal with those types of questions because the Southern Illinois press corps seems quite understaffed and rather docile these days. So, as a "retired/recovering journalist," here goes:
1. You vowed a "national search," but you hired someone who was a considered an odds-on favorite from the very beginning. Please explain how and why this outcome occurred.
2. (if Johnson is hired) In your interview about the coaching search, you strongly emphasized hiring a proven winner with head coaching experience, but your choice is a career assistant. Why did this philosophical change occur?
3. (if Smithpeters) Coach Smithpeters has been available since March 13, when Missouri was eliminated from postseason consideration. Did you consider hiring him right off the bat so he could get right to work?
4. What qualities do you see in Smithpeters/Johnson -- neither of whom has been a head coach in an NCAA postseason tournament -- that makes you believe they are upgrades over the previous coach?
5. What is your plan to put recruiting tools such as NIL money and a practice facility at your new coach's disposal?
6. Many fans are angry over Mullins' firing. Many also are unhappy about the way this hiring process unfolded. In short, the fanbase seemingly is on the brink of an insurrection (probably too strong, but ...) What do you say to calm the fanbase at this point?
Many of us might be able to answer those questions more accurately and honestly than Leonard; would be interesting to see what type of spin he'd put on the situation. Then again, anyone who asks questions with an edge might get booted from the news conference.

Maybe Saluki insider can get a press credential. Haha

Barkeep could represent the board and his first question would start something like this”I hate Bradley and everything it represents!” “Do you have a question?” “No I just wanted to be clear on my feelings towards Bradley and it’s fan base!”
@airdawg86 agree, but if he is any decent coach he will have some of the other numbers on his mind too!

a friend was there during the Hinson circus press conference. I think the most people in attendance were not impressed but the administration.

pretty much sounds like me 🤣
So glad you are not my neighbor. So if it’s not Spradlin, did he pass or did we? I imagine maybe he just wanted more than we could offer. It sounds like Ben M. isn’t going to be the guy at MSU according to their board anyway. Some were saying he wanted too much, if that’s the case he isn’t coming here.
I think maybe our leadership over estimated the draw of SIU given our resources and NIL? Established coaches, especially those looking to move up, want a good situation in that area, especially if a complete rebuild is on the horizon. It may very well require us to hire someone looking to be a head coach as more incentive.
we were way better off sticking with Mullins.
Hello everyone. I've been reading the forums for a few years now and finally decided to join.
Here is an update on the coaching search from the Southern.
Leonard, who has been sorting through names for the last two weeks, said he has been dealing with business agents for the coaches this week moreso than the coaches themselves.
“I think you can sense my frustration with that,” he said. “Overall, I’m pleased where we’re at in the search process — with the guys we’re going after and all — but I would rather deal with coaches face-to-face, not agents.”
Leonard said he could not divulge the names of those on his short list for hire. He did say that he has offers on the table to a “couple favorites.”
Thank you for joining and posting this .
that being said more propaganda. This administration may be clueless but they hide their tracks well
Watching Iowa State & looking through their assistants. Could JR Blount be a possibility? Played at Loyola Chicago and was an assistant at Drake
This is going hilariously. You can tell by the Leonard quotes in the article that came out recently it’s going awful… I hope he is losing sleep over this, cause he’s certainly going to cost him his job! Thank goodness for that!
All of you being optimistic is funny. We had the best candidate, we let him go… now we are scrambling 😂😂 get what you ask for!

Mullins isn't being re-hired so you're free to go to the DePaul board. I get not liking the Mullins call but it's time to move on.

it’s more than that now, now we can’t even make the hire we want. We are going to have to settle for like the 5th candidate on our list lol we are a joke.
