This is going hilariously. You can tell by the Leonard quotes in the article that came out recently it’s going awful… I hope he is losing sleep over this, cause he’s certainly going to cost him his job! Thank goodness for that!

Mullins isn't being re-hired so you're free to go to the DePaul board.  I get not liking the Mullins call but it's time to move on.

it’s more than that now, now we can’t even make the hire we want. We are going to have to settle for like the 5th candidate on our list lol we are a joke.

You were claiming last week that Kyle Smithpeters was the lead candidate and it was predetermined when Mullins was fired but are now saying we're on our 5th option.

Should the hire be Smithpeters or Johnson, Leonard needs to be asked some hard, potentially unpleasant questions at the introductory news conference. Somehow, though, I doubt he'll have to deal with those types of questions because the Southern Illinois press corps seems quite understaffed and rather docile these days. So, as a "retired/recovering journalist," here goes:

1. You vowed a "national search," but you hired someone who was a considered an odds-on favorite from the very beginning. Please explain how and why this outcome occurred.

2. (if Johnson is hired) In your interview about the coaching search, you strongly emphasized hiring a proven winner with head coaching experience, but your choice is a career assistant. Why did this philosophical change occur?

3. (if Smithpeters) Coach Smithpeters has been available since March 13, when Missouri was eliminated from postseason consideration. Did you consider hiring him right off the bat so he could get right to work?

4. What qualities do you see in Smithpeters/Johnson -- neither of whom has been a head coach in an NCAA postseason tournament -- that makes you believe they are upgrades over the previous coach?

5. What is your plan to put recruiting tools such as NIL money and a practice facility at your new coach's disposal?

6. Many fans are angry over Mullins' firing. Many also are unhappy about the way this hiring process unfolded. In short, the fanbase seemingly is on the brink of an insurrection (probably too strong, but ...) What do you say to calm the fanbase at this point?

Many of us might be able to answer those questions more accurately and honestly than Leonard; would be interesting to see what type of spin he'd put on the situation. Then again, anyone who asks questions with an edge might get booted from the news conference.

Leonard is not in charge of this train wreck, our wonderful chancellor is in in charge. By the way, his office is not really great about responding to alumin emails. They are in “change” mode. Their choice of words, not mine.

And his wife never came to town.  Isn’t that position a lot of wining and dining?  Oh yes it is kind of hard when your wife stay in Houston.

thank you. The next hire will always be compared to Bryan Mullins who was doing well and didn’t deserve to be fired.

So go root for DePaul.  It's clear you care more about Mullins than SIU.

Seems like Spradlin fell apart because the SMU job opened.  Will Lutz could get that job but he's probably out the door the next 2 years anyways and that's a natural fit for Spradlin (WKU).

Just a hunch, but I don’t think a university president’s wife is weighed too heavily in hiring decisions.

Wow you are so smart.  Barkeep was talking about the chancellor and I was agreeing with him because they, as a family have not been committed to SIU.  How anyone hired a chancellor without having a clause in the contract about family living in Carbondale I will never know.

The only way SIU implodes is if they hire Kent Williams.  Smithpeters or Johnson are meh hires, I think we can do better personally and hope we look at more candidates but I'll support either one.

Any of the hires you mention there could be complete disasters. Could one of those work out, maybe, but all would be very risky hires and not at all what Leonard messaged in his interviews two weeks ago.

@salukiworld

so Smithpeters and Johnson would be “ meh” hires but you would support them.
Tell me why if one of them is hired that they are better than the last coach? Also I thought we wanted the best hire and a national search. Looking for D1,2 HC experience.

I was trying to tell you guys who were unimpressed with Spradlin's resume that he would have been a great hire for SIU and the options behind him might not be great.

I'm hoping if Lane, Leonard, or whoever is running the show is reading this that they take a look at more options.  There are plenty of good assistants and lower level coaches out there that are attainable for SIU.
