so Smithpeters and Johnson would be “ meh” hires but you would support them.
Tell me why if one of them is hired that they are better than the last coach? Also I thought we wanted the best hire and a national search. Looking for D1,2 HC experience.

Smithpeters built a regional John A Logan's program into a champion and was able to recruit the hell out of that place including Jay Scrubb, who was drafted to the NBA.  If this was last season and Mizzou didn't go 0-18, it would be seen as a great hire for SIU.  The 0-18 in the SEC though gives me major pause and lessens the excitement of it.  But Smithpeters would likely come in right away with his connections and build out a pretty talented roster.  Remains to be seen if he can be a good coach in D1 though.

Johnson is the associate head coach of an SEC school that won an NCAA Tournament game last night.

Again, I hope we look at more options.  Eric Henderson at South Dakota State, Jerrod Calhoun at Youngstown State, JR Blount Iowa State's assistant, Chester Frazier and Tim Anderson at Illinois.

Any of the hires you mention there could be complete disasters. Could one of those work out, maybe, but all would be very risky hires and not at all what Leonard messaged in his interviews two weeks ago.

I'm hoping if Lane, Leonard, or whoever is running the show is reading this that they take a look at more options.  There are plenty of good assistants and lower level coaches out there that are attainable for SIU.

I'm not taking anything as the Gospel truth until there's an official announcement, whenever that might happen. My gut feeling is that there still might be quite a few moving parts behind the scenes and another option could emerge, although maybe that is false hope.

big step up from JC to D1. Also it’s a lot easier to recruit to a Power 6 conference than to the SIU’s of the world. So if our administration has been telling us that they are looking for the qualifications that they listed but comes up with a JC HC with with no D1 HC experience. Or an assistant coach for just 2-3 years and his other experience is non coaching related. We have a problem with our administration not doing their job.

according to a so called source. The SMU job is open with the WKU coach wanting it. Which means our candidate wants the WKU job. So according to this source. He backed off from us!  FWIW.

He was a major piece (if not the main recruiter) to a top 5 class nationally at Mizzou. He recruited at a level below us very well, and now a level above us very well. I’d say he can handle the in between.

Yes, it’s easier to recruit to the SEC, but Mizzou isn’t pulling classes like that normally. They aren’t Kentucky, Duke, or Kansas.

I have tried to stay out of the "coach search" madness.  And, I have no interest in Kyle Smithpeters either way.  However, I admit some puzzlement regrading the frequent references to the 0-18 record at Missou and implying that he somehow was a reason for that record.  That is like blaming any shortcomings in SIU's success on Vince Fritz.    Especially since Kyle is being given some credit for the great recruiting class they have coming in next year.  Apparently there are some legitimate concerns about his becoming the next HC but being a rather low ranking assistant coach in his second year on a team with and 0-18 conference record isn't one of them.

I may not agree it was time for a change, but I could see it. What is perplexing to me is that you would do so without having your ducks in a row for a successor. Change for the sake of change is not really a plan to succeed unless your program was a dumpster fire.

will see who the final hire is. But don’t say we are looking at coaches that have D1,2 HC coaching experience and hire someone that doesn’t fit that criteria. I know this fan base is smarter than the administration think they are.

So he gets major credit for bringing great players to Mizzou but no responsibility for their performance?

Got it.

And not sure calling him (accurately) a “rather low-ranking assistant coach” is especially confidence-inspiring.

I would think SMU could do better than WKU's coach. I mean, WKU made the tournament yeah, they got hot and won three games and got the auto bid. But they were not a great team this year. Before that streak they had lost 4 in a row and were 19-11 and only 8-8 in a pretty shitty conference. I'd think they could find someone better than that.

Lutz is an extremely impressive coach that worked under McDermott at Creighton and Painter at Purdue.  All he's done as a head coach is win.  He went to Texas A&M Corpus Christi and made the Tournament in his first 2 seasons and then flipped Western Kentucky's roster and made the NCAA's in his first year there.

They said they wanted someone with HC experience but I don’t remember anyone specifying D1 or D2. I think they said sustained success at any level. I could be wrong though.

Different assistants get different roles. It isn’t fair to give all success without placing any blame, or vice versa. But Kyle is a recruiter. Plain and simple. I’d bet money on that is his main role at Mizzou. And the recruiting has been good since he got there.

Without naming names, Not all of our assistants add much during practices. Some are here to recruit.

Yeah, i get that, but neither team was very good. Texas A&M Corpus Christi was 4-7 against DI opponents outside of their extremely shitty conference. Then at WKU before the hot streak in the CUSA tourney, they were a whopping 16-11 against DI opponents and 8-8 in a shitty conference. I think his success is way overblown. He is getting lucky at the right time with pretty shitty teams to be honest.
