It would take a dramatic shift of the league to move it. St. Louis flat out makes too much sense location wise.

Not to mention branding-wise. Arch Madness.

So we are talking about safety?….and Chicago comes up as an option?  Kind of laughable. I would assume most downtown areas in major cities would be relatively the same.  Venture out and safety probably becomes an issue.

There is not a problem with safety in downtown St. Louis when there is a sporting event (Cardinals, Blues, MVC tournament). When there is no event, downtown St. Louis is a ghost town. A lot of companies have left for the burbs to avoid a 1% income tax on employees working in the city. There are not enough people living downtown to keep stores and restaurants open. Sad but true.

Keep in mind, Saturday night is the home debut of St. Louis’ MLS team at their new stadium down the street from Enterprise.  I’d imagine there’s going to be plenty of police presence all weekend.

I go to around 10 Cardinals games per year and maybe around 5 Blues games in downtown and occasionally to Arch Madness. Literally not less than 50 times total. I’ve never felt unsafe. I have, however, felt unsafe in downtown Carbondale as a student once or twice. This is overblown.

STL can certainly be dangerous in certain areas, but no, you aren’t going to be shot on your short walk to the Enterprise Center. And as always with any city, walk with the pack to your hotel or parking garage.

I lived in Carbondale for 20 years and I currently live in St. Louis County and worked downtown for at least 7 years non-consecutively - going on 21 years living in St. Louis County. I couldn't agree with you more. I certainly personally encountered scarier situations in Carbondale as a child / teenager / Saluki than i have ever personally encountered downtown.

I worked downtown and near Union Station for several years - drove across the McKinley Toll Bridge everyday. Lunch I would often walk for 30 minutes around the Soldiers Memorial area and parks or go down to the Admiral Casino for a (hopefully roulette financed) lunch. I will say driving down Salisbury and Jefferson, past the burn-out brick houses, etc. on the near North Side, to Union Station was a bit stimulating.

Never saw a crime or felt scared in the slightest, but I was usually out of there by 4 pm (as recommended by my company).

Scariest part was driving across that bridge (before they rehabbed it) and seeing the Mississippi through the holes in the pavement. YIKES!!

Once they closed it for two years, I had to cross the Poplar Street Bridge - also scary during the rush hour - and drive north on Rt. 3 through Brooklyn and Venice - not a comforting drive that.

I found the Chicago thing amusing as well. I know there is probably some Chicago bias because of the alumni there. But come on. Lol

St. Louis is ranked the country's #1 most dangerous city because the study included East St. Louis.  But don't forget- Carbondale, IL was ranked #16! 😮

Actually, it doesn't include East St Louis, but it only includes the incorporated city and not St Louis County. St Louis is one of the only cities in the country where the city isn't incorporated into the county. This results in the "city" being a much smaller area than most any other American city. It just covers what most folks would consider the inner city. It doesn't include more affluent suburban areas that most cities like Chicago include in their crime statistics. This skews the data, big time.

@resaluki-88    Chicago's crime statistics do not include the suburbs.  There are data bases that reflect the entire metro area, but Chicago's is not diluted by including the suburbs.

Many cities crime statistics do include the suburbs. I thought Chicago was included in that. If not, my apologies. Here is an article that better explains cities like St Louis and how the crime data comparison isn't always apples to apples:

Was just at the America’s Center for a gymnastics meet tonight.  No concerns. Will be back again next week to watch the Salukis play and STL City SC kick off.  Be aware, avoid bad areas, try to be with a crowd.

STL City SC just won their first game at Austin. Saturday night is going to be nuts downtown!
