@salukiworld I think he's probably better than just good domask was great and he played in small town Wisconsin

From what I’ve seen/heard, I think his defense will be ready to go from the beginning but he needs to improve as a scorer and facilitator.  Don’t think he’s as ready as Domask was in his first year but I think he’s going to be good.

Honestly though, it’s really hard to get excited about next year unless there’s some portal hits.  And it’s even harder knowing you wasted Domask & Jones for 4 years and couldn’t even hit an NIT.

Davis is a very good facilitator! I've seen him play in person. Vashon used him as a point forward much of the time. He sees the floor extremely well and is a very good passer. Also, he scored plenty when they need it. He took over games when needed. He has a pretty decent stroke from 3. Also, he can go and get his shot. Something we have been missing!

Regarding Marcus, I really thought he would go pro. However, I thought if he stayed in college he would stay at SIU. Disappointing, but he has been a great player, student and citizen. Best of luck to him, he represented SIU very well!

For the second time today, the portal sucks. Period.

Not sure you can blame the portal here.  Marcus gave SIU 4 years and they couldn’t build a team that could win around him.  Now he’s using the opportunity to go play for a winner with the COVID year (I’m sure with some $$$ thrown in).  Unfortunately, it’s really hard for me to have confidence in the next rebuild because of this.

The portal sucks. An annual meat auction, the highest bidders win. Process that.

You hit the nail on the head with building a program around him.  Unless there is a portal miracle SIU is looking to continue their 16 year NCAA Tourney drought.  The program is not even close to tourney ready

Everyone is crying the blues about losing Marcus which is understandable and thinking the ship is sinking I have a quote from Joaquin Andujar "you never know"

I stand by what i say every year, if you don't WANT to be here, then while I appreciate what you have done, good bye and good luck.  We are seeing the transformation of the Mulilns Era or the beginning of the end of it.  Absolutely critical that he recruit difference makers, which he has not done to date.

Late last week I was told by someone very close to the program that there was a good chance that Marcus would be back. But unfortunately that was false hope . We can blame the portal all we want but ultimately Marcus wants to play in the postseason and THAT is what drove this ultimate decision. Who can blame him that is what we as SIU fans have wanted for 16 years.

@mdogs1 if playing in the postseason was the main reason Domask left, that’s a pretty damning indictment of the SIU men’s basketball program.  Yikes.

Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.

They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.

The portal does suck. That said, we can either whine about it, or at least attempt to use it to our advantage in relation to other MVC schools.

Change is a constant in NCAA basketball. Either adapt or die.

@fraydog While I agree with you in premise when a staff devotes time and effort to develop players and they leave for greener pastures because you don't have the resources of a power 5 school or you haven't built your program to compete on a yearly basis which takes time it is hard to adapt when you are playing against a stacked deck and with 2 mid majors in final 4 I am sure changes will be made to make sure that doesn't happen again in the future

Winners find a way around every single real and valid point you mention and still find a way to win.

Like you just said, two mid-majors got in the Final Four so there are ways SIU can adapt.

Todays NCAA , more so resembles Juco ball where the turnover is constant.  Mullins and staff have been lazer focused on building the culture, getting the right guys, and to an extent it has worked, excellent grades in the classroom , no one showing up in the legal system.  However , the results on the court haven’t quite been good enough .  The bottom line is we need more talent.  Weber had to take a chance on a kid to get us over the hump. Lowerys sweet 16 team , didn’t completely stay out of the court reports.  It’s a fine line , but our talent level just hasn’t been quite good enough.

For all the talk about how old Drake was last year, SIU was just as old if not older.  SIU went all in for their 23 wins last year and put development on the back burner and they barely got to Saturday in one of the ugliest Arch Madness games I’ve seen.  I’m hoping last year wasn’t the peak, it doesn’t take 4 years to build a program when the portal exists, you can rebuild in an offseason if you play your cards right.
