I am impressed that they tried to raise the money.
Let’s all be totally honest here. There wasn’t going to be any postseason next season even if Domask and Jones both returned.
Now we find out if Mullins can recruit and if he is willing to change his defense-only philosophy.
If Domask and Jones coming back wouldn't have put us in position for one of the two postseason tournaments that matter next year given the Valley turnover, we are in a much worse spot than I would have imagined. We had a couple scholarships to work with to bring in a consistent 3rd scorer/wing and a backup PG.
I think the Valley is so bad, they would have been preseason #1’s but that doesn’t guarantee much. They had a chance to do this last offseason and they added about 18 points per game among 3 players in the portal. They lost Coupet and Verplancken who averaged about 17.5 points per game themselves. Verplancken averaged 13.2 points per game on his own this season.
not so sure . UNI is gonna be a ton and Drake has not lost their coach or his kid yet
If UNI keeps their players, they will win the MVC IMO. Drake will be good too - good coach and his wimpy kid! 🙂
Indiana State and UNI will be right up there with Drake and a reloaded Bradley (because that’s what Wardle can do).
I think we are in trouble. Not sure BM was the mastermind behind Loyola’s offense that went inside out through Krutwig.
The transfer portal is going to make me enter therapy. This is the dumbest bullshit I’ve seen the NCAA pull - and that’s saying something.
The only thing they *may* be dumber is SIU’s own inability to see writing on the wall - their constant bumblefaacking around to get their shit together to end the longest postseason drought in school history.
Division 2 kids want to go to the OVC. SIU kinda wants to go to the Big 12. Big 12 kids want to go to Duke. Everybody, please, just stay at the damn school that brung’ ya.
Such a damn shame. When I go to Busch Stadium, I wear my Stan Musial jersey. Because a Stan the Man jersey will never fade. He is forever etched in history. If Albert Pujols had not left STL for ten years, my future great-great-grandkids would be wearing his jersey. He would have a key to the city. But now? We still love him, but it’s tainted. There’s an asterisk. There’s a “but…”
I told myself that I would not look at SI until next fall, but I went to the Southern’s website to see the headlines and the this headline shook its dirty little finger at me…
No surprise. I'm grateful for him, and at the same time I'm ready to move on.
Time for Mullins to earn his paycheck and build an actual offense.
I think an actual offense may require a regime change.
I've thought for a long time that the 3 pt. shot, as exciting as it is, has hurt the game in some ways. The midrange game has about disappeared it seems. I see players pass up a 10 ft shot for a dubious 22 ft shot. We relied so much on the 3 - without enough good 3pt shooters - that I think it really hurt us.

I appreciate his honesty in the interview. He’s a good kid and you can tell it was a tough decision for him, but probably the correct one. I’m sure most of us have been in situations before where we have had to make a similar decision for what’s best for ourselves.
It still hurts and it will for a while, but I’ll always root for Marcus.

Agreed. It also appears the staff didn’t know his decision until after they were all back from spring break. I think someone on here said he had pretty much decided back in January (he may have been leaning that way, I have no doubt). Tough position to be in and I wish him nothing but success. He didn’t have to do this interview, class act!
The interview affirmed that factors like NIL money and chasing scoring records weren't the main drivers: it was a basketball decision and looking for a new challenge. Coming from Marcus, I believe it, and it's what I figured all along, given the way he's wired. I thought SIU's best chance to keep him was for him to give getting the Dawgs back to the NCAA one last crack, and I'm sure that was a strong emotional pull. It was tough to hear how close it sounds like it was to having him back for another year.
Anyways, glad he did the interview, and safe to say he will be fondly remembered around here for the long-haul. Ordinarily I would NOT be in favor of putting athletes in the Saluki HOF who transfer out but I would make an exception for Marcus, especially considering he played four years and will graduate from SIU.

Well said! Four years and graduate, move on in order to do what's best for your career/dreams. No one could ask for anymore, although he will be sorely missed. Good luck Marcus!
I’m happy to see Marcus’ decision treated with so much class and respect on here. While I hate to see him go too, it’s nice to see so many wishing him well and good luck and understanding his difficult circumstances and decisions and not cursing his name on his way out the door. Marcus has a future in coaching and may resurface here some day as an assistant coach, grad assistant or even head coach so it’s best to end on good terms. Also, while unlikely, there have been a few instances of guys entering the portal and never leaving. Yuri Collins at SLU did that last year for example. Not saying I have any sort of source or knowledge that that’s an even remote possibility for Marcus. But it’s best to not drag his name through the mud in case word does get back to him. Happy to see this board handle it that way.
IllinoisLoyalty Message Board has Domask visiting Illinois this weekend:

I don’t see any chance Marcus plays for that lunatic Underwood. Good coach but a full on mental case 🤣
