Current MVC stats (per game):

MoSt 10.6

Drake 11

Valpo 11

Evansville 11.3

Loyola 11.4

SIU 11.5

Murray St 11.6

UNI 11.7

Belmont 11.7

UIC 11.9

IndSU 13

Redturds 13.6

Bradley 13.8

FYI:

Illinois averages 12.8. Wisconsin and St. Thomas lead the country with 8.6 per game. #1 Gonzaga averages 11.9 per game. Mo State is 25th in the country at 10.6. Only 37 schools average fewer than 11 TOs per game.

SIU is 63rd out of 358 D1 schools. For SIU, Jones has the most TOs at 72 (to go with 52 steals) and Domask is next at 61 (with 22 steals).

In the MVC, Bradley turns the ball over the most with point guard Terry Roberts leading the team with 83 turnovers so far. Roberts, who has played two more games than Jones, has 41 steals, 2nd in the MVC to Jones with 52.

SIU also often plays at a very methodical pace, so you’d expect fewer turnovers when you’re not playing uptempo much and have fewer possessions.

Some turnovers are more concerning than others aggressive ones like some of Lance's can be excused trying to get a better opportunity to a teammate but shot clock violations and moving screens are inexcusable

You would think so but also depends on opponent and how well we execute the O. In that awful game at UNI where we only scored 44 pts, we had 16 TOs. At USF (52 pts), we had 14.

In the loss at Mo St (81 - 76), we only had 8. In our highest scoring game (77 - 55 over Valpo), we only had 7.

I want to preface this by saying LJ is absolutely critical to the success we’ve had to date and any success we’ll have moving forward, at least in the near term. We can have a discussion on areas of his game that he could improve while still appreciating everything he does for this team. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive. Same goes for Domask, Coupet, Fillewich, et. al.

Now on to the stats…SIU turnovers per game aren’t awful, but that number is masked to some degree because we are ranked 352nd in possessions per game (62.3). That means there fewer opportunities to turn the ball over, but it also means every turnover is that much more magnified. LJ’s  steals help offset that to some degree, but no one that I’m aware, is saying he needs to improve on D. He’s been great so far this year. His Asst/TO is bad any way you slice it…0.65 this year. Those are not numbers you want from a starting PG. Part of the issue is ideally he wouldn’t even be playing that position. That’s why it is so critical to get another PG ready to contribute immediately for next year ( Brian Moore come on down!). It is an absolutely valid criticism of his game and does nothing to take away from all the other awesome things he does on the court. You can live with some of his aggressive turnovers and absolutely some of those are a result of late in the shot clock drives where he is trying to make a play, but if we are going to challenge for titles he’s got to limit those 5+ turnover games. Here is the other thing…he’s had quite a few games where he’s able to play aggressively but mostly stay under control…and when he does he’s almost unguardable.

For me, that’s one of the last pieces of his game that will make him a 1st team all MVC player. I’m not so worried about his FT percentage, I think that will pick back up again and he seems to be regaining his feel from long range the last few games. If he keeps that going, lookout!

Tonight he was awesome, I’ll live with the 2 TOs 😀

Whoa, whoa, whoa….are you a coach?  You can’t say that here, you’ll get thrown under the bus and out with the wolves.  That’s sarcasm by the way. Agree,  The only way we start competing for championships again, is if we are critical of our players and expect the best out of them….not just good but great.  Well said….my point today was the play with 6ish seconds and him fouling….nobody can say that that was a good play.  It was a mental error….get rid of those and he’ll be leading us the the championship.

Arch madness prediction….we correct a few of our errors and make a run into the championship game but run out of gas and lose in the final.

No doubt it would be nice to see Jones turn it over less. Same goes for Domask. Most games Jones hasn't been too bad, but those high TO games hurt. Marcus has had a couple bad games too.

The assists I don't blame on Lance. Every game he makes some terrific passes, and he certainly isn't a selfish player. Unfortunately a lot of the recipients of those passes can't score and can't shoot, and last I heard that's how you get an assist.

The bigger problem with Jones is his FT shooting. He gets fouled a lot, so shooting 56% vs 71% last year hurts. He has actually shot better from outside than last year... but worse on the 3s - 33% to 42.5%.

I  doubt we have turned it over as much as the previous two years. We're not losing games due to TOs. We're losing them due to poor shooting, poor rebounding, poor stand-around offense, ineffective post play, unbalanced scoring....

I mean yeah I guess it would be nice if Domask could turn it over less, but he's at 1.77 Asst/TO ratio and averages almost 4 assists per game. I guess he's finding the people that make the shots. Domask has had 2 games with 5+ turnovers compared to Jones 4 and Jones is averaging 0.7 turnovers more per game. My bigger concern with Domask is his lack of aggressiveness on the offensive end sometimes. Feels like he gets too unselfish and passes up good looks. I also wonder where his mid-range game went some nights when he isn't as successful backing a bigger defender down. He used to pull up on the face up from 12-15 pretty regularly on those guys in the past.

Poor rebounding and TO's go hand in hand...is that just not getting extra possessions? Agree on everything else. We've actually been better rebounding this year than in year's past...although offensive rebounding has been hit or miss (more misses than hits), but some of that is by design, whether people on here like it or not.

SIU is 132nd in the country in turnover % on the offensive end, so less than average.  One of the main problems with this team is they're 174th in the country in 2 point % (49.9%) led mostly by the fact that they're 337th in the country in block % on the offensive end (11.8%).  This team struggles at finishing near the basket in a big way which is likely due to the lack of athleticism we've been talking about.
