SIU gets an Evansville team playing 3 games in 5 days at the Banterra Center on Saturday and coming off a double OT loss on Thursday to Indiana State.

Last Meeting:

SIU and Evansville matched up for the first Valley game of the year way back on December 1st.  Playing without Lance Jones, SIU got up 32-15 in the first half but Evansville came storming back to tie it at 52 before Marcus Domask hit a game winner with .3 seconds left to give SIU a 54-52 win.   Domask led SIU scorers with 22 points.  Evansville's Shamar Givance led all scorers with 31 points on 11-16 shooting.  The two teams combined for just 4 offensive rebounds.

Purple Aces to Watch:

Shamar Givance 14.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.6 SPG

Jawaun Newton 13.3 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 1.3 APG

Noah Frederking 7.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG

Note: Jawaun Newton missed the two Indiana State games this week with a knee injury and is day to day

Win the next 2 home games and we pretty much lock up 6th place and avoid Thursday at the mvc tourney. I think we match up much better with UNI or even Drake than Missouri State, so I am hoping Missouri State finishes 4th and faces a Bradley team that would have a definite shot at beating the Bears in the 1st round. Looking forward to seeing us play a tired Aces team. Really looking forward to the Bradley game to see if we can finally beat a decent team at home!

you don't see many over/unders of 113 in college basketball these days.  makes us kind of rare.  sort of special.

I'm calling an exceptional boring win for SIU 54-42.  Domask with 20+ points today.  Regardless, I'll be there cheering them on!

Was looking at SVP's stats for a bit, and two things stood out to me:

  • He's only taken 6 free throws this year, and he has hit all 6.  For as good as a shooter as he is, and with how he tends to play with a shifty style of play, why not encourage SVP to try and draw more fouls?  That might help get his shot going, but that hasn't really been a problem - it's been a lack of volume.
  • In games when SVP has shot the ball > 8 times, he's shooting 58.6% and averaging 12.8 points / game.  I take that as why in the world is he not getting 10+ shots every single game?

On the rare occasions Verplancken does drive, he usually goes to that fadeaway in the lane, which isn’t going to draw much contact. Agree it seems like prioritizing getting him more shots would make some sense, given the state of the offense.

No Newton for Evansville.  This *should* be an easy one.  Push the tempo against a bad and tired Evansville team and get out of here with an easy win.

Good start on the offense, playing with pace.  Defense, not so much.
