Some classic games there. Happy to say I was able to attend many of the tournaments across the country, good times!

Brilliant--thanks so much for putting that together!

And thats just the Chicago State loss in 2014!

A friend and I attended that game. What a disappointment that was!

I just watched the 2002 NCAA game against Texas Tech. Holy crap, was that team good: so quick and athletic. Brooks and Hairston were only freshman but didn't look it at all (especially Brooks). Utterly dominant inside and out. Dearman with 17 and 11, Roberts with 12 and 4 but 5 blocks. And the D--wow!

Could be mistaken, but I think that was the last game ever coached by Bobby Knight. When Roland stole the ball and dunked at other end, Knight looked at his son and says “where are we eating tonight?”, according to a news account I read at the time.

There was so much stuff that Roberts did that didn't show up in the box score in that game. I remember being surprised by how tame his "conventional" numbers looked in the box score.
What a freaking beast that guy was.

I was at that game too! 😆 (And the Georgia one as well). Watching it again, man were we relentless! BMull should show this and the Georgia game (as well as some others from '07) to the team.

Seeing the SIU enrollment number at the beginning of the Tech game was kind of sad. It’s really unbelievable how we went from 22,500 or so in 2002 to less than 12,000 in 2019. Hopefully our current basketball team can help fuel an upswing with increased publicity!

Yes, that pretty much staggered me too. I actually gasped even though I saw it coming (because they did Tech first).

The damage of years of poor decision making at SIU and to a lesser extent; the city of Carbondale are certainly reflected in the decline of enrollment. It feels like things have hit a turning point on multiple fronts though. Hopefully that continues and SIU bounces back. The region needs it.
As for this fantastic thread, that '02 squad was the best Saluki team I've seen in my lifetime. They were so fast, strong, athletic and deep. Even though they ran into a ridiculously talented UConn team in the Sweet 16, had they been able to make ANY shots from range they would've been right there in the end with a good chance to win. In my opinion, that team was a legit Final Four contender and if they played well, they could've beaten anyone on any given night that year. What a team that was.

Wow! Thanks for this thread. Memories for an old Saluki fan!
"Final Four"-able teams in my lifetime:
66/67 NIT champs that might have lost to UCLA if given opportunity, but cf Frazier/Knicks vs Lakers.
2001/2 Beaten by UConn
2006/7 This one still hurts. This was clearly a Final Four team that suffered lousy breaks for the Sweet 16 with Shaw less than 100% and 3 costly outright officiating errors (not judgement calls) vs Kansas

The RS year for Brooks really paid off for him. And Coach Weber had the book on Coach Knight.

"(A)fter George Mason University’s magical Final Four run in the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 2006, applications jumped 22 percent in the following year. And at Butler University, after its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament championship game in 2010, applications jumped from 6,760 to 9,518."
