I was there, and the atmosphere was amazing -- even though SIU didn't win. Checked the record books and the attendance was 10,307; official capacity at the time was 10,014. That was the last sellout for many years. We had a few sellouts during my freshman and sophomore years, but that was the only time I remember fans standing in the areas between the bleachers in the upper bowl. People were squeezed in everywhere. 

My dad and I had season tickets that year behind the basket. The Larry Bird rebound on the missed free throw broke my heart. Howard Cosell talked about the game on his morning radio show the next day. Gottfried's first year. We went 15-13 with a very talented roster put together by Paul Lambert and his staff. Really underachieved. Should have known after that year Gottfried would be a disaster.
