A less than inspiring game...but Sheridan Sharpe looks like he has come of age for the Salukis this trip.
Steffe 1 - 6. First make.
Sharp has 10 pts.
Sykes had a really nice game, 10 pts, 8 rbds. He is a very instinctive rebounder and very athletic. He does need to improve his decision making under duress in the lane on the offensive end though.
SIU got good practice against a lot of zone which is valuable experience. SIU played hard. Overall, I thought they played decent defense, but did let Florida Tech drive the lane too much. Effort was there though, especially given extremely tired legs.
We shot 54.1% for the game.SIU is shooting 38.7% through a half against an 0-5 D2 team. Gonna be a long season guys
I recommend not playing basketball in an ice rink. Good way to rack up injuries. Crap tournament IMO. We can do better.

Agree - Sykes is a very good rebounder.
Nice to see that the team remembered in the second half that they were playing a D-2 team. Now come home, rest those tired legs, and surprise us with a win over Bradley next Tuesday.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Eat up and enjoy the long weekend, and enjoy the feast, 'cause the rest of the season could be famine. 😉
Kennard would’ve been a good all-tournament candidate had Southern beat a D1 team. 😆
Sharp looking like he can help is the silver lining from a tough week. Hoping they incorporate some finishing around the rim drills into upcoming practices because that was a major problem for multiple guys throughout the tournament.
Plenty of work to be done and a very tough MVC opener looming. Hopefully they get Aligbe back for that but either way, the other bigs need to pick it up.

If there is an upside to this frustrating start, it's that SIU has gotten help from some unexpected sources. Aligbe was coming along nicely before he was injured. Sharp looks as if he will contribute. I'm not sure anybody expected much from either of those guys when this roster was finalized.
Of course, considering the way things went, I'd guess that it'll be awhile before SIU schedules another Florida trip. A couple of nightmarish losses, a game that got away in the closing minutes, a season-ending injury to a top player and another injury that sidelined a guy with a lot of potential -- that's a lot of Murphy's Law and bad karma.

I have this odd feeling that, barring any other major injuries, SIU is going to be a very dangerous team about 1 March.

During the pregame interview with SIU's athletic trainer it sounds like Aligbe's has a grade l or ll and not high ankle sprain, but they won't know for sure until they get home. If that turns out to be true it's very good news. If it was a high ankle sprain he could easily be out until late January. I don't see him playing against Bradley, but if it's a grade l maybe he's back in a couple weeks. Grade ll might be more like mid to late December. Just speculating.
