No matter who picks who from the portal it is hard to blend in some people can reload with transfers but I would rather do it the hard way because you cant always count on transfers I would rather build through high school players and an occasional transfer for sustainability

This.  If Mullins way works, its sustainable. You don't see Loyola and Murray building through transfers, they go get freshmen and develop them then supplement their team with transfers

Umm in Loyola's final four run I believe two of their starters were transfers. You need a good mix in the current landscape

And looking at this year's Loyola rotation, just off the top of my head, Norris, Uguak, Schwieger, Knight, Hall and Clemons are all transfers, whether from D-I, D-II or JUCO. No doubt a mix is the way to go in this era, and that Southern probably needs to show more success on the transfer front going forward (while hopefully retaining key players, which has been a recent positive).

I should have been more specific... It is not ideal to have a bunch of one year transfers.  I agree, the transfer game is different now, you can go get sophomores not just graduate seniors.  I still prefer Wonders and Ebube paths.  If they stay at SIU I have high hopes for what they look like in 5 years.

Personally my bet is on Hornecker being the next big thing around here.  I do think there is a lot to love about the other guys mentioned here, but Hornecker had some serious offers.  Being a 3 star 7 footer doesn't hurt either.  I'm going to put an overly positive prediction that he is a starter in year 1!

I wouldn't expect much from Hornecker in year 1.  He seems incredibly raw and needs to put on muscle.  He's honestly a redshirt candidate if they did it with Wonders and Ebube.  Haven't heard much about how he's doing at all this year in high school.

Ebube is a guy that I think is going to be a good player at SIU.  He's the extremely athletic player we're looking for and has lost weight and built up muscle since he dominated high school.  I'm not sure how much you can expect out of Ebube next year though too given it's his first full season.  It's why I've not really been on board with wasting a year with him and Wonders on a team that's going to struggle to finish .500 in the Valley.

Wouldn't the opposite be true, why waste a year of eligibility on a team that isn't going to be that good.  He should be playing his second year with the same guys in Domask and Jones.

I just think it wastes some of next season too and we’re just going to claim SIU is young again in year 4 because they’re playing at least 2 Freshmen minutes, possibly 3 if Hornecker is getting run.

I don't think playing freshman make you young.  I think it is healthy to have a mix of classes.  5th year seniors to freshman.  Next years group should be veteran with a mix of young guys.  You won't hear me claim they are young next year.  They aren't young this year, they just didn't make the expected leap due to the top teams retaining players they shouldn't have.  Imagine if Tatum and Young got an extra year their senior seasons, how could anybody behind us have passed us the next year? would have been nearly impossible.

While watching the warmups last night at the Loyola game, I was struck how many of our players were dunking the ball.  Lance and Dalton were both dunking easily and Lance was bouncing the ball off the floor and dunking it.  They were showing much more athleticism that I have seen watching the games on TV.  I don't remember a single dunk in the game by us and we had a couple of opportunities to do so and in one instance it could have prevented a miss of a bunny shot by a big.  We do have the players to win in this league, but we do not have a lot of leeway when good shots are not going down.

I think they do too much showboating when warming up. Dunking is fine but they often look like they're in a dunking contest rather than warming up before a game.

True, but we also heard a lot more about the numbers from Foster Wonders his senior year than we did from D'Amico.  But look who is getting playing time now, and who isn't.

That has nothing to do with anything.

I think SIU needs to stop relying on grad transfer, D2 transfers, and JUCOs. Exclusively recruit and develop prep players.

JFC! What do you think they have been doing??? Probably the best recruiting class in the MVC last year, and 2/3 are redshirting.

SIU literally starts a JUCO, a grad transfer, and a D2 transfer.

SIU has to improve on offense.  Once again last night, it was one guy driving to the basket, a big attempting to set a screen, and three guys watching.  That's not acceptable at the college level.  We need to send our coaching staff to a clinic if this doesn't improve.  Absolutely terrible offense.

So we barely lost to a team that was very recently ranked in top 25. My God, we must really suck.

So we barely lost to a team that was very recently ranked in top 25. My God, we must really suck.

They also lost to a Little Rock team that's ranked 311 in KenPom, aka a bottom 40-45 team in college basketball.  And they lost by double digits to a Northeastern team that's #260 in KenPom and is 0-9 in the CAA.

They're also 3-6 in the MVC in a year where most of us expected better and expected them to take a step up.  Instead, they're much closer to last year's 9th place team.

And it's not really that they lost to Loyola, it's how they lost.  They held them to 44 points and 30% shooting and couldn't muster enough offense to win a game that was all set up for them to win.
