Kyle and Tyler Smithpeters were in the Banterra Center with several members, if not all, of the John A. Logan Men's Basketball team to watch the Drake game on January 19, 2020. They were all sitting in section 111.

I generally don't know what Smithpeters is expecting if he thinks he should get the head coach job. He's great at what he does at JALC but how many JUCO head coaches actually jump to Division 1 as head coaches with no D1 experience?
Probably not many, but Nolan Richardson won a JC Nat'l Championship, then won the NIT at Tulsa the next year (I think he took several of his JC players with him.) Few years later won a Nat'l Champ. at Arkansas.
Academics and character issues may play a role:
It's not going to be long where players, wherever they are currently playing (HS or JC) are going to WANT to come to SIU. I think coaches overuse the word "special", but I'm telling you, this season, what this coaching staff has done from recruiting, to player development, getting the team to buy in, etc. is simply SPECIAL and recruits see that. They know this team is likely one (big?) player away from competing for a Valley crown and NCAA tournament. I don't care if they come from JAL, FL, Maine, Washington state, etc.
