I am neither an optimist, nor stoned. The man is already at work. You are getting worked up over a press release. Don't.Not worried about Howard was told last week it was done, by several people in the AD. I am more worried about players and getting ones that aren't role players. While Kennedy would be a good role player he has NEVER averaged more than 8 ppg a game. He has played 4 years of college ball already. Stats don't usually lie. Of the three seniors that could return sorry but not excited about it being Trent Brown. This team has lost 4 to the portal and has yet to sign ANYONE this spring. Anyone really not concerned about that?
You'd have to be stoned or the ultimate optimist not to at least be somewhat concerned. It's the evening of April 18, there are five open scholarships and no returnees who averaged more than 7 ppg.
However, to your point about Kennedy ... guess what, if he averaged 15 ppg at Loyola, first off he probably wouldn't be transferring, but if he was, Southern would have very little chance to get him. That's reality. Show me all the MVC transfer portal signings of players who were major scorers at leagues that are as good or better than the Valley. Maybe Howard's arrival eventually gets Southern in on more sought-after transfers ... I sure hope so, but if he does, he'll be very tough to retain.
Considering how ultra-competitive it is to get the kind of difference-makers you're looking for out of the portal, IMO, the best chance for the SIUs of the world to have stars is to sign good high school players, develop them and pray you can retain them (see Domask). Easier to get them when they're already here, if that makes some sense (excuse the Yogi Berra-sm). That's why Wonders fizzling was a big disappointment to me and why it's very important that kids like Ebube, Hornecker and Davis develop into big-time performers.
I'm not worked up over the press release, if you're referring to me. My post about being concerned is the bigger picture about the numerous roster holes/shortage of scoring firepower/lack of spring recruiting results to this point.

Read his post again. The concern isn’t over a Howard announcement. It’s over the fact that it’s mid-April and we have an 8-man roster.

Hey at least we outman Valpo 2 to 1; I think they only have four
Recruiting has been a major concern of this program since day one. Much time and effort was spent on priority recruits in the past only to get rejected. It good the staff and administration identified this and took action. SIU got one of the BEST to turn the tide. JH has about a 14 day window to sell recruits to come for next years roster. JH is a great thing for SIU and team Mullins.

I absolutely could NOT agree more, from the recruiting in MUCH need of improvement to the fact that we may have gotten one of the best. Now to see if he can make a difference as soon as year 1. Let's Go !!!!!!
@siudawgs Sorry, I did misunderstand you. This is a Howard thread so I thought you were talking about Howard at the beginning, but I see you are not.@siudog I am neither an optimist, nor stoned. Clayton Custer took an assistant job at Loyola Chicago taking over for Amorrow Morgan who went to Cal
Valpo also named their staff and it looks like a good one:

I do NOT usually play forum police, but when I do, I question how/why a Valpo coaching notification comes up in a Jerrance Howard thread. : )
Guess who’s back in the motherf*.*ing house!! 🥂 🍻
Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.
They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.
This is what it took to get the salukis some much-needed national exposure/attention.
Go check out the Quotes for the Jeff Goodman tweet. Lots of excitement all over the place about this.
And it hasn’t even officially been announced by Southern yet.
